"Calling Down Fire examines the social and cultural influence of Jefferson County, New York, an isolated, agrarian setting, on the formation of Charles Grandison Finney's theology and revival methods. Finney, who later became president of Oberlin College, was arguably the most innovative and influential revivalist of the Second Great Awakening. He pioneered methods which were widely adopted and promoted a theology that emphasized the ability of evangelists to save souls and the importance of free will in the salvation process. Marianne Perciaccante follows the course of religious enthusiasm and the evolution of the reform impulse in Jefferson County following Finney's departure for more influential pulpits. When Finney began to preach in Jefferson County, he brought Baptist and Methodist piety to the Presbyterians of the northern section of the county. This pious fervor eventually was adopted widely by middle-class Presbyterians and Congregationalists and constituted an acceptance by elites of tempered, non-elite piety. Contrasting with scholarship that posits that the arrival of the Erie Canal encouraged newly displaced city residents to seek solace in revivals, this book argues that revivals cannot be considered atypical events which develop only in the midst of social dislocation. Jefferson County was distant from the Erie Canal and its citizens did not undergo great change as a result of it, yet the county developed a strong revival tradition. Perciaccante maintains that emotional fervor should be seen as a normal expression of piety for Baptists and Methodists, as well as for a number of other Protestants of the early-nineteenth-century northeast."

comprehensive, no-holds barred political history

Armando Navarro has written a comprehensive political history of the Mexicano in American society. It is difficult reading for some (see other reviews), yet no legitimate historian can argue with the research, the insights and the accuracy of much of what is said here. Rather than a "patriotic" or simply an "adversarial history", Navarro has written a nuanced analysis of what it has been to be Mexican in American society. While some may disagree with his recommendations, they will be hard put to find a better chronicling of this history. Navarro will rank among the best of U.S. scholars of color, and will be known for a long time as one of the most prolific and influential Chicano scholars of all time. Move over Norm Chomsky, Howard Zinn and Rudy Acuna.

Navarro predicts that by 2015 half of California will be Brown. By 2025 half of the southwest is going to be Brown. He states that we might have to change the White House to the Brown House. This book underlynies the policital forces that prevent and have prevented Mexicans from taking polictical control.

It came in great condition even though it was a used textbook. a little watered damage but nothing that would interfere with the actual text in the book. the book itself is great to have if you're interested in Chicano history, it goes into great detail through different time periods. a must have for anyone interested in Chicano culture and history.

Readable blueprint for commercial real estate investing

Extremely well written for a business book. It not only gives you valuable knowledge in a useful form, but it tells you a story of how investment in commercial property can literally change your life and your family's options and choices in everything from where and how you live, to education, to healthcare and the opportunity to contribute to society. This is written by a man who has done what he writes about and is still doing it and growing his holdings every day and is willing to share his workable strategy with the reader. Thanks, Cherif.

Good motivational book, but written on "best case scenario" basis

The author does a good job explaining the CRE industry in general , however, I find his strategies to be "the best case scenario" strategies. He makes it sound way too simple, such as tying up a property under contract and then finding a national tenant. While that's certainly possible in the rare occasion, it's definitely a "better then best case scenario" and definitely not easily done

Good primer

I think this was a good "eye opener" to the possibilities inherent in commercial real state investing. I am a novice at this point so those with some experience investing in commercial real state, may not find it that fascinating. I think it covers a lot of different strategies with a lot of breath, but quite limited in depth. Also if you're considering investing in real estate, you may want to explore other detailed texts. The author does advertise his courses and training program, which may be a turn off for some. Overall I found it useful, knowing the opportunities out there. Again this is coming from an individual with no prior knowledge or experience with commercial real state. A further draw back was a bias towards emphasising the upside of commercial real state investing, with limited coverage of risks associated with this type of investing. Hopefully if you seek to pursue commercial real state investing, then you will be wise to seek further information from more detailed texts, and ofcourse work with professionals worth their weight in gold. Great book about an amazing movie

Fans of the late Brandon Lee and of the movie "The Crow", I highly recommend this book. The book describes in detail of the events before and during the filming of "The Crow", from the creation of the comic book "The Crow" by James O' Barr... to the start of production... to the tragic shooting death of Brandon Lee... to finishing the film without Lee using computer technology and stunt doubles. It also talks about the other people involved in the movie, (i.e. actors, actresses, director, producer, stunt coordinator, etc...). This book not only describes the events that took place during the filming process, but also has a short, but informative bio on Brandon Lee before he took on the role as Eric Draven. The most gripping part of the book is when the author, Bridget Baiss, describes the events leading up the the shooting death of Brandon Lee, until his death on the operating table. It was so thoroughly described that I felt I was actually there to witness it for myself, it sent chills down my spine as I read it. For those who want to get the whole story of this amazing movie, and the tragedy that happened because of it, this is the book to read.

Such a wonderful Book~!

I really enjoyed reading "The Crow -Story behind the film"...every chapter,every page,EVERY WORD was exciting to read on through this book.Perhaps because I am such a Brandon Lee fan and still 'til this day do I believe that The Crow was arguably his best work ever..and this book tells it ALL~!......from its origins as first starting out being a comic book,trying to make this gothic love story into a film,the struggles of making the movie,of course the hugest tragedy which took the life of the young star,the cause of his death and how the movie was finished without the late Brandon Lee......the best part about this book was how the author got so much information from different cast and crew members who were all once part of the film....this was the best part about the book since I was so curious to know how each and every person who was responsible in making this film felt about making it and how they reacted to that fateful nite of the shooting .....as well as how they or if they ever learned to cope with this difficult experience.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to every CROW/Brandon Lee fan or anyone who once saw this film and became interested in what exactly happened on the set to this promising actor who had such a promising future .......I have collected many Brandon Lee memorabilias in almost the past decade but I must say that this book is definitely the most treasured one I have since it closes the ending chapter to the person I admire so much.

To Find Out What Really Happened . . . .

As a longtime Crow fan, I was interested in finding out exactly what happened behind the scenes during the production of the film. Baiss' book does an excellent job of providing this information, through the use of quotes taken from several crew and cast members. My only criticism is how poorly the book was written. I am not sure who the editor is, but the book is riddled with grammatical and typographical errors to the point where I don't understand how it made it to publication. Her flow is also a little difficult to follow in places, although this may simply be a result of Baiss being a first-time writer. Also, most of the major individuals involved in the production of this film, including the director, would not speak with Baiss, so the account is mainly from the view of several cast and technical crew members. I would, however, recommend it for those interested in what really happened during production of "The Crow." I came away knowing more than I had before, even if I had trouble wading through all the typos.

Fascinating Research, A Must Read Series!

What is the Wave? According to the author, a hypothetical 'quantum wave collapse' that will drastically alter life on Earth. In my opinion, the finest work by this author, The Wave holds nothing back. Aliens, History, Monsters, Quantum Physics, God, the Origin of Life on Earth, Why we are here, it's all in these eight books. They form a primer that allows your mind to take off and explore previous regions of thought you never may have known existed!

The series forms a picture that everyone on earth should at least consider openly, and reject only with solid data.

Her citations and methods of research are incredible, attempting 'superluminal' communication in a way never done before - scientifically! And following clues given from the experiment she tracks all sorts of fantastic ideas and theories that may hold the key as to why we are here and what we should be doing.

Recommended to anyone who can has an open mind and an edge for the mysterious.

Wave series 1-8, Vol 3

Ok, this one I find the best, only because of the overlay of the entire 'show' of creation that is put forth, the much 'bigger picture' if you well. It is part of the ongoing 'wave' series, currently 8 volumes in length, as the author shares with the reader her esoteric self-discovery of truth. It utilizes the channeled version of her own 'guidance', her subconscious, higher self or whatever you want to call spirit.

If you've come across this series, you are in questioning mode or have stepped deep in the doo-doo and I would suggest you get out quickly. The Matrix is not made to be known to most people, awakening is a right of passage that few can survive successfully, so if in doubt, run don't walk. The truth can be quite scary at times, especially if one is alone and in the dark without any knowledge to light the way.

This book series is such a light, if you are ready for it, but like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, I would suggest you not pull back that curtain on the hidden man behind it unless you want to take a ride through the unknown like she did.
