Books 4 and 5 review

The author continues with the saga of the Burrows family and those who have joined in the fight against the Chinese invaders. These two books are fast paced with lots of action, albeit, some action is once again far fetched and exudes the perspective that; the Chinese don't know what they're doing. Whenever they're attacked, by any of the Burrows clan, it's overly simplistic and everyone seems to know exactly what needs to be done to take them out. They've taken down four helicopters now with ease and precise measures, along with 50-60 invaders and other 'bad guys.' Pretty darn good for 'civilians.'

Over five books now (very short novels), they're just getting around to forming their 'militia.' The government thus far, doesn't seem to be fighting at all, and it's implied that; Ian Burrows is the only person that could or can possibly make all the difference in the world. I kept asking myself throughout these two books; "where the heck is the military?" There's no way there would only be National Guard personnel in a national situation like this.

I sense that this series is going to grow into a lot more short books before it's all done and over with. I haven't yet decided if I'll continue with this series, for it's beginning to bog down for me. Plus, if the author is paying someone to 'edit' for him...he's NOT getting his money's worth. There are words that are left out and usage of wrong words. Several times, the word "thought" is written as "though." This isn't something a spell check will pick up...it has to be proofread to catch these things.

Anyway...the premise of the story is good, it's just lacking some logical thought lines that would make the story flow and make more sense. For example; Any CIA operative would have went out and tracked down Captain Wu immediately, once it was brought to their attention that he was in the area. But Ian doesn't do that...he lets it go, and it costs them dearly. That was not logical and made no sense...especially when they had the manpower to do so. All the kids are depicted as 'SEAL Team" members who are ready and willing to take the fight to the enemy. And Mary? Here's a gal that; within two weeks, becomes so gung-ho that she wants to kill anything that moves, yet in book one, she didn't like guns and was scared of guns. But because her partner was killed by the invaders, and Ian gave her a 15 second pep talk, she is now the 'sniper' for the Burrows clan. It's kind of laughable, really.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest in the series and will continue to look forward to the next. The book moves quickly and you're always left wanting more.

Love this series! Wish it were all in one longer book!!

GREAT quick read! I love TEOTWAWKI fiction and this is one of my top three favorites out of the dozens I've read. Not implausible and gives some good tips in amongst the story without taking away from it. The ONLY issues are 1- a few editing issues where words are misspelled and 2- I HATE having each "book" really be a chapter!!!! PLEASE don't do this! I would much rather buy them all at once as one BOOK instead of 5 or more chapter sized short stories. That makes me crazy and the only reason I bought this is because of the great reviews. I normally will pass over any book less than 200 pages.

It took them two years and 25 countries. Along the way, these neophyte cyclists encountered warm-hearted strangers, bicycle-hating drivers, rock-throwing Egyptians, over-protective Thai policemen, and great personal joys.

They returned to a new life in Santa Barbara, one Barbara never lived to savor. She was killed in a street accident, Barbara and her bicycle vs. a truck. We are lucky to have this memoir, throughout which her vitality, warmth and compassion glow.

Opens your eyes, but be ready with a tissue

With all the reviews posted here, it's hard not to sound like a "me-too" reviewer... But there are some aspects of this book that can still be called out. [FIRST] Prospective bike tourists tend to think of equipment, conditioning, and education as the tasks they need to do in preparation. But if you're taking on something as significant as a world tour, you'd better be prepared to trust your touring partner, because the stress will be on your relationship. Barbara brings this out beautifully, both in describing the changes she went through with her husband Larry, and the contrast between their growing partnership and some of the more parasitic folks they picked up along the way. [SECOND] Something Americans don't often "get," even when we take conventional tours, is how very different this country is from other parts of the world. Barbara's graphic descriptions of cycling through Egypt (frightening) and India (just very crowded and no privacy) bring this home in a unique manner. And, were the Savages brave or stupid to travel through bandit-terrorized areas of Thailand? She leaves just enough ambiguity to our imagination so that we have to think it through ourselves. [FINALLY] An activity that was for 10-mile, casual spins became a daily routine, and I hate to see Barbara and Larry boarding that plane for California at the end of their journey. I want to know that they'll continue their ride, seeking further adventures -- and it hits me hard to learn that Barbara was killed in a cycling accident while the book was at press. This book grew on me, as good stories do, and I wanted to believe at the end that I could pick up the phone and somehow invite Barbara and Larry out for a ride. I have to "settle" for doing it myself some day.

Barbara and Larry got me started!

Picking up this book on a whim, I had no idea what impact Barbara and Larry would have on me! Even though the story is 25 years old, it is fresh as can be. Read this book and then read "Hey Mom,Can I ride my bike across America?" and see how Barbara and Larry inspired a middle school teacher, his wife and 5 students to ride their bikes from DC to California. It's amazing how well these books go together.

A wake-up call from your daily routine...

Having failed to read of Barbara's tragic death until finished with the book, I felt as though I'd lost a friend at the story's end. The spirit with which Barbara and Larry embraced life on their journey makes me look at my world much more thankfully for its simple pleasures. Enduring physical and mental hardships as well as relishing the pleasures of creation and human kindness, Barbara Savage sparked in me a yearning to break free of my daily routine and reach out to others however I can. Perhaps one day our family will create a cycling adventure of our own!
