but for serious scholars it is a useful reference, and for amateur political junkies like me ...

This is not the sort of book you sit down and read cover to cover, but for serious scholars it is a useful reference, and for amateur political junkies like me it is fascinating to dip into. I can look up specific showings by specific candidates --how did James D. Cox do in Ohio in 1918, a win that positioned him to be the Democratic presidential candidate in 1920? I can also trace how party showings changed (or did not change) over time, state by state or county: my home county (Wood County, Ohio) was as solidly Republican in 1920 as I remember it being in the 1950s. Or I can just notice interesting points --the relatively respectable showings by many minor parties such as the Socialists, for example .If there is a weakness, it is that it does not include primary results -- this is especially noticeable in southern states where all it gives is the general election result between the Democratic primary winner and a nominal Republican, as with Huey Long in Louisiana in 1928. However, it may not be fair to expect inclusion of another body of data which would have roughly doubled the book's size.

Book is Pointless -- Content Best Accessed Electronically

After I made my notes on my review of Michael J. Dubin's United States Gubernatorial Elections, 1912-1931: The Official Results by State and County, I saw that many reviews have stated similar impressions. In particular, I don't think I am alone in concluding the existence of this book is wholly unnecessary(!) Don't get me wrong; there is nothing offensive or at all unsettling about this book's existence. It just seems to have been a wasted effort. The author admits some of his best sources were records that he accessed via the Internet.

The book offers no insight on the factual data presented; it consists of lists of data. The Internet seems the best forum by far for such information presentation, to my mind. The introduction written by the author is an embarrassment to introductions to non-fiction works everywhere. It's shockingly short, and worse yet it gives short shrift to its subject. It's totally bare bones stuff -- the insights provided by the author into the material presented in the body of the book I could count on one hand.

Compounding the futile nature of printing simple data in a book rather than simply making it available electronically is this book's utterly boring visual presentation. The data is listed in text form; nothing interesting in terms of graphics, layout, or color is attempted, which I find striking in a book published this year! Moreover, the text itself is tall and unwieldy; this is no handy pocket-guide by any means.

In conclusion, this book is pointless in its entirety according to this reader's best judgment. Please be advised I received a copy of this book through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.

The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book

Several months ago the Washington Post published a picture section with some of the pictures in Air by Vincent Laforet. After seeing them , I immediately had to find this book and purchase it. It had not yet been published but the publisher was taking orders. The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book. The bulk of the photographs were taken at night, with a few taken at dusk, dawn, or during the day. Laforet captures all the color, detail and patterns of major cities throughout the world. They really convey the enormity of these large cities and present both macroscopic view and more microscopic views of the cities from the air. Some show the patterns, or lack of patterns, of the roadways and layout of the cities. Others show the skyscrapers taken from afar while others provide a closer view. The colors come from the myriad of lighting sources to produce a wide palette of vivid nighttime colors. I have always loved the old black & white photographs taken of New York City, but now seeing the city and its skyscrapers at night is even more thrilling.

The book itself is a coffee table book, measuring about 11" x15" and is quite hefty. It is printed on high quality paper. I mention this because Amazon incorrectly lists the size as being 5.9 x 0.9 x 8.3 inches. My only complaint about the book is that the pages do not lie flat. Many, if not most, pictures span two opposing pages and the curvature of the crease detracts from the visual impact of the photographs. The photographs were clearly taken with a very high resolution camera, which adds to the visual impact of the photographs. I showed the book to my wife and she, being very budget conscious, asked how much it cost. When I told her that it cost $59, she breathed a sigh of relief telling me that she though it cost over $100. Considering the quality of the photographs, this book is a real bargain. This book will likely appeal to photography aficionados and world travelers.

Photos were great; font not so much.

I too just received my copy of the book which I had preordered before publication. I'm a retired printer so naturally I checked out the quality of the printing and binding first and found both to be absolutely first class. No problem there. The paper stock used is appropriately heavy and opaque given that the photos were flooded with ink. Again, no problem.

The photos themselves were awesome! Reaction to art is highly personal so I won't comment too much on the photos except to say that the shots with shallow depth of field didn't always work for me. Printing photos across the gutter on a two page spread is doomed to be problematic and it was. The vast majority however were a marvel to view. I do have an objection to the type font and ink color choice used throughout, particularly the Foreword and Introduction, and that cost one star on how I rated the book. Using a thin, sans serif type and then printing in a shade of gray ink was a big mistake. Very artsy but not practical. It may work for some readers but I had to use a magnifying glass to read it.

I'll be proud to have this book on the coffee table.

This coffee-table book did not meet my expectations, especially after watching the CBS segment on Vincent Laforet. At the very least there could have been a small description accompanying each photo. Other than well-known landmarks far too much was left the reader to try to decipher what was photographed. I would not recommend this purchase to anyone. In fact, if I​ could, I would return it for a refund.

Twisting, turning, tantalizing...and terrific!

The long, eagerly anticipated sequel to Master of Crows (MoC) has finally arrived and will soon be in wide release to the general public. Fans of Ms Draven's wonderful stories will enjoy this novella, which takes place at Neith a few years after the events of MoC.

Without getting too much into the details, suffice it to say that little did Neith's inhabitants suspect that Martise's early wintry morning's mushroom-picking jaunt would turn into a terrifying encounter with a ghostly presence and the opening of a gate to an unknown half-world.

What follows is the subtly portrayed deep-seated love between the former apprentice and her master, as well as between the couple, their magefinder Cael, and servant Gurn, as well as the suspense of determining who and/or what is driving the events Martise is experiencing. However, once a portion of the puzzle unravels, the mystery deepens even more. Nothing is what it appears, least of all… a wraith king.

There is a scene in which Martise is having a nightmare; it brought to vivid life for me the Nazgul in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Lest anyone think I’m comparing TBoBW to LotR, I’m emphatically not because the books and worlds are very different, but the description within the nightmare instantly made me think of the Nazgul.

I think readers will be more than pleasantly surprised at the tantalizing twists and turns TBoBW takes. If there is any disappointment to be had, it is that TBoBW is not a full novel, but that is a minor quibble in the scheme of things, especially as Ms Draven has promised more books in this series.

Note: Readers do not need to read Master of Crows to enjoy The Brush of Black Wings, but doing so will enhance their pleasure.

One Of The Better Novellas I Have Read In Years

OK, I came in from a hard day's work and after cleaning up I thought "I will just read a few pages before bed", sadly that was NOT going to happen for several hours, curse you Grace Draven.

I started in on the story at about the 20% mark from a previous day's reading that I was forced to abandon because I am married (and have a desire to remain that way). It seems that windows have to be cleaned every 5 years or so I have been told and it was my turn (actually it is always "my turn" for this task from She Who Must Be Obeyed) but I digress.

I read the original story in the lives of these characters years ago in the epic Master of Crows and this story felt like visiting old friends as its sequel. The shortness of novellas prevent me from revealing too much in my reviews and this is the case here as well. At only about 100 pages it seems to read much longer and told a very detailed story which is where novellas usually fall short with me, not the case here. The seemingly innocent beginning to this story quickly evolves into a life or death situation with a light touch of "I can't live without her" although the slight vibe from the Master of Crows that indicate he considers himself above such things lends a nice touch to the obvious falsehood of that idea along with a statement that he would "never listen to her again". The quickness with which the stress level was ratcheted up indicates good writing along with the inability to put it down once you pass a certain point (see sentence #1).

While I don't do spoilers of any kind if I can help it, this was a wonderful continuation of the characters I have wondered about for about 4 years, pretty much all expectations were met and the story was riveting (see sentence #1) and as usual, things did not happen as I expected. I hope I don't have to wait 4 more years to get another story in the Master of Crows world but I have to say it was worth the wait, I just don't have to enjoy being patient, it's not my strong suit. Some teasers that might tie this story into a future book in her Wraith Kings series add a bit of mystery to the ending and means I will probably keep this story handy to refer back to when/if that occurs.

After mulling over only a couple of very minor complaints (so minor I did not even mention them) I have to give it 4.5 Stars which gets rounded to 5 Stars in most places I post reviews. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Love This Author

This was truly good. Draven is my number one recommendation to any who ask these days. There are some loose ends; it feels like a small piece of something larger, and my supposition is that an addition to this particular series will make reading this slice of the story more engaging.

As far as her writing goes, I still believe she's terrific, and I can't wait to read her next offering.
