The British Edda the real Edda

L.A. Waddell's thesis is that the Poetical Edda has been mistakenly assumed to be the work of Scandinavians or Norse and the gods within the text are Scandinavian or Norse. Waddell proves that the language of the text is actually of British-Gothic origin and composed in Britain. "That the Edda, in its existing mediaeval version, was composed in Britain is now admitted by the leading authorities on the language of the Eddic texts in Scandinavia as well as Britain..." Snorri Sturlason ( 1179-1241) is usualy attributed for translating the text but Waddell believes that Snorri "concoted" the idea that the work is a far out fairy tell in Icelandic venacular. "But we shall find that Snorri's fictitious tale is no Edda at all, and that his purported translations of the Edda extracts, which he sites...show that he did not understand many of the critical words in the Edda, which are British and non-Icelandic. I find Waddell's theory to be important as we witness the revival of Odinism and Wotanism in Europe and America. Some of the "New Age" Norse Religion revisions are based on Snorri's "concoted" interpretations. This book contiues Waddell's theory that the British (not Celts) have their origin in Phrygia or Ancient Troy and that the Edda is a historical story actual people and events. My only problem with his work is that he pulls the biblical Adam and Eve into the historical interpretation which as a result has given the British Israel crowd fuel for their far out ideas. As a result Waddell probably recieves less attention than he deserves.

This book has been in my library for about 20 years. When I first read it, I was very impressed and went on to read Waddell's "Makers of Civilization in Race & History." More recently I have been doing a lot of research into the Eddas, copies of which I have in the Old Norse as well as in the best English and German translations. Compared with these, Waddell's translation, if that's what you want to call it, of the Eddas is full of rubbish that he, no doubt, invented in order to promote the stupid Aryan racist agenda, so fashionable among certain members of the British aristocracy in the 1920s. It is very unfortunate, mainly because he does touch on the thesis that the Norse material originated in the ancient Middle East, something not entirely at variance with Snorri Sturluson's Ynglinga Saga. L. A. Waddell was a very unbalanced, hot-headed and eccentric amateur archaeologist and writer in the field of Sumerian antiquities. He came to full blown conclusions far far too easily, considering that he was writing in the 1920s and 1930s, and that to date only a very small fraction of the Sumerian literary relics have been excavated, let alone translated. He writes in a style that is aimed at cowing his ignorant public. I would suggest that anyone who reads his work be very critical and take much with a liberal grain of salt. Waddell's "Makers of Civilization" is a better work than his "British Edda." In it, he reconstructs the entire Sumerian king lists with the help of such texts as the Vayu Purana, but there even, be careful.

L.A. Wadell's "British Edda" is the Bible of Odinism.
His use of Adam-Thor and elements from what we call the Bible is a part of his theory that the Bible of the Hebrews is largely a copy of literature existing prior to the time the Bible of the Hebrews was compiled.
He outlines this idea convincingly in his "Makers of Civilization" (where he also makes the connection of ADAM-GAUR-THOR) and it makes its mark in "The British Edda".
This has historical merit. For example, as Ignatius Donnelly points out in his book on Atlantis the word "Noah" is of Aryan derivation -- the root "No" having to do with water and found in Aryan maritime Gods and demigods like Neptune and the Nymphs. This, in addition to the fact that Flood myths far predate the Semitic (and eventually Hebrew) Flood myths would seem to indicate that a large part of "our" Bible is but a rough copying of previous myths.
Thus the fear that "British Israelites" could use the "British Edda"--a Pagan Holy Book--for anything useful in order to back up their worship of the Hebraic Sky God is, in my view, an unfounded fear. And where their Bible is a book of spiritual bondage to the tribal deity Yahweh and, later, to an impotent self-proclaimed demigod, the Edda is a tale of heroism.
It's advantage over the "other" Eddas of the north is that it gives a sense of historical perspective the others lack. HIGHLY recommended!

About the Author

Thomas A. Lipo received his BEE and MS degrees at Marquette University and his Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin in 1968. After 10 years at the Corporate R&D Center of the General Electric Company in Schenectady. New York, he joined Purdue University as professor in 1978 and subsequently took the same position at the University of Wisconsin in 1980. He was granted the 2004 Hilldale Award, the university’s most prestigious award for scientific achievement. He has published more than 550 technical papers, secured 35 U.S. patents, and written five books in his discipline. He is a Fellow of IEEE and IET (London), and he is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering (USA) and the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK).

Not just a Scratch on the Surface

If you think that a title like Anne Frank -10 Days implies a simple overview of this brave girl's life, you are mistaken, as I was. When I opened the book, I expected a scratch on the surface, a mere 10 days in the life of the famous Jewish girl who fled Nazi Germany, and was captured and imprisoned in the cruelest of concentration camps. Author David Colbert, who has published many adult and children's biographies, does not simply scratch the surface, but takes the reader on an in-depth journey into Anne's emotions and acts of bravery. At times, the lump in my throat and knot in my stomach grew so strong with pity and admiration for this young girl that I had to take a break from the book.

While the book is cleverly broken down into 10 influential days in Anne's life, like being captured by the Nazi army and holding her sister while she died from disease, Colbert makes it seem like a complete biography. He weaves in memories from the past and backstory, along with historical descriptions of the time period, so that the reader finishes not lacking anything.

Anne Frank -10 Days is an ideal book for the at-risk reader of middle school age. Although the book is written at a seventh grade level, the layout, headings, pictures, and clear style make it an easy read to comprehend. The tough issues of death, disease, and torture make it appropriate for children old enough to handle this and discuss how it makes them feel.

It shouldn't be her last. Ms. Cribbs writes with fresh voice filled with romance and steam. No gratuitous sex just for the sake of sex. Her characters come together for lust imbued with love.

Can't wait for Charles and Jessica's story, as well as the man to tame Marcella.

Good story, horrible editing

While the story has potential, the constant typo's, grammatical errors and lack of editing took away from the experience. To the author, keep up the good work but I implore you to have a proofreader and editor the next go round. To the readers, if you can get over the issues I've mentioned, give it a read. I won't be rereading or earnestly recommend this title until there is an updated version and will be cautious of purchasing future titles due to this. I do recommend the author as I see the ability to write a great story in this first reading experience of her work.

PLOT: Angela and Isaac exchanged emails for years. Though the two have long been interested in each other, Isaac was encouraged to keep his distance. But Isaac decides he’s waited long enough. When he pursues her, Angela thinks all he wants is sex and she won’t commit to more.

PROS: The sex scenes are hot and Isaac was sweet and oh so sexy.

CONS: There are some editorial errors, but it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the story.

4.5 -5 STARS: From Friends to Lovers is a very enjoyable read.

Very Helpful Introduction to Eating (and Living) in Rome By a Long-Time Resident

Readers and prospective tourists who dream of Rome will find this to be a 'must have' book. Elizabeth Minchilli, American-born; Italian-wed, has spent enough time living in Rome and studying the city to write authoritatively about its food ways, restaurants, trattorias, pastry shops, market sources and so on. And write she has: check out her popular blog or buy her top-rated restaurant app, also titled 'Eating in Rome."

In a friendly and engaging voice the author seems to invite us into her own apartment and life as she explains how to 'eat like a Roman' at restaurants, in your rented apartment, out on the street (getting harder thanks to changing local laws) and she explains where Romans eat and where they find the best of it. Chapters deal with the intricacies of coffee consumption, the Roman love of artichokes and bitter greens and other vegetables in season; how to stock a Roman pantry (there or in the U.S.A.); the Roman way with pasta; Rome's love of pork products; how Romans feed their young children and how they feed their pets; 'cucina di Mama' (Mama's cooking--that was the best!); the Sunday lunch tradition; the new antipasto buffets, panino and, of course, gelato. All along the way there are recipes for signature dishes with tempting pictures of the plated results.

I have visited Rome for multi-day stays over recent years. As a 'plan ahead' tourist I have always looked for a book like this without really finding one until now. This food-oriented guide will prepare you culturally and will point you to specific restaurants and markets. You will know just what might be in a good few typical dishes BEFORE you order them! You will also be in possession of many helpful tips about what might be expected of you in a coffee bar, trattoria or restaurant as far as ordering, paying, tipping and when you may not sit at a table and the like. Should you buy and follow this book, you can experience some fine Roman-style meals at home or you can travel there with some confidence and have a fine souvenir to review when you come home! That's what I'm using my copy for.

I bought this book for timely inspiration as we were going to Italy with an itinerary including Rome. This book is great whether you are planning a visit, want insight to the unique food culture of this fascinating city, or seek recipes which are traditionally Roman. I knew from other reading that Italy's cooking and food tastes are extremely diverse, localized, and dependent on the local ingredients. This book was great for understanding not only the food culture of Romans, but also the greater Lazio province, and the cultural drivers that have influenced their local cuisine. Minchelli, despite having relocated to Italy as a preteen, helps connect the content to an American's point of view. Through an understanding of how Romans eat, shop, and celebrate through food, the reader gets a greater connection to this people's history.

The best part was visiting so many of the places she shared in the book. Ate fabulous meals at Sora Margherita and Perilli, discovered "guanciale" the fabled cured (but not smoked) pork cheek which provides the base flavor of so many Roman dishes, and I'm making her carbonara recipe for dinner this evening. (Peril served it with rigatoni and I intend to do the same. Guanciale? Check!) Sadly, US grown artichokes are nothing like those served in Rome.

Part memoir, part journal, and part cookbook. All good stuff.

This book is a great book for those visiting Rome for the first time. Plus It's the perfect size to throw into your suitcase. It's a lovely very personal account of living in Rome. I think the recipes are easy to follow and give you a sense of how Romans eat, just like the title. It's a lovely addition to your Italian travel book collection. I loved the book. I found it charming and highly entertaining to read. I have already gifted it to friends who will be traveling to Rome for the first time in September.

Not Specific Enough

Although this book is entitled "PERSIAN Breed Profile", there is so little mention of the breed. The bulk of the book (really a magazine guide) talks about bringing your kitten home, but even this is so very general. I didn't especially find it helpful.

Animal Genes and Lessons for Humans

It has been but a few decades since the structure of the DNA molecule was discovered, a structure of astonishing simplicity. The complexity comes with the infinite arrangements of the four simple letters of the molecule, and the array of proteins that the arrangements code for. We are just at the beginning of understanding and using the coding, and Stephen O'Brien, head of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the National Cancer Institutes, is one of the decoders. In _Tears of the Cheetah: And Other Tales from the Genomic Frontier_, he has told fourteen stories of deciphering DNA for the purpose of determining animal history. There are remarkable discoveries outlined here, in which O'Brien directly took part or supervised those who did (he is gracious in his acknowledgement of these colleagues), and some of the molecular science is complex and will challenge readers who are not familiar with the field. The stories themselves, however, are compelling, and will be a good introduction to just what sort of mysteries are being unlocked by our knowledge of DNA and genomes (the sum total of an animal's genes), and how the solution of the mysteries holds potential not just for intellectual satisfaction but for the benefit of humanity.
The story that gives the book its title is about genetic studies of wild cheetahs, and it reflects a theme of a population bottleneck which is frequent in these pages. Because 12,000 years ago, the number of cheetahs were drastically cut (probably by an epidemic), only a handful remained to breed. When O'Brien came to investigate why cheetahs were breeding so badly in zoos and preserves, there was a shock: there was almost no variation in cheetah DNA. They were as inbred as lab mice. Some mice in China a thousand years ago, however, had been squeak by a viral plague because they had part of the virus incorporated into their own DNA; this may mean that all sorts of DNA strands of viral preventatives are awaiting our discovery, and use. There is a chapter here on Florida's endangered panthers, which like cheetahs are dangerously inbred, and the politics of conservation of species and subspecies. O'Brien explains how feline immunodeficiency virus (something like our HIV) infects many cat species but kills few of them because beneficial genetic changes are evolving. There is a fine chapter on the century of controversy about how to classify panda bears. There were good arguments from the physical characteristics of pandas that put them in the bear family, but there were others that indicated they were related more to raccoons. The argument was at a dead end; some of the means of classifying animals are based on simple human judgement and are therefore to a degree subjective. With examination of the DNA, however, O'Brien's team could show that the panda's ancestors split away from the family of bears about twenty million years ago. Pandas are bears, and the controversy is, thanks to molecular genetics, over. Looking at DNA has been the way to show that meat from endangered whales was being sold illegally in Japanese markets, forever changing the sham arguments that the Japanese used that their whaling was only for scientific research. O'Brien's team was involved in solving a murder by DNA fingerprinting, but not DNA of the murderer; O'Brien is an expert on feline DNA, and they had to make a link between the murderer and the only applicable physical evidence, cat fur on a jacket spattered by the victim's blood. The cat belonged to the murderer's family. Another chapter shows that amazingly, the human gene lines that squeaked through the bubonic plague in the Middle Ages may be the ones that are best fighting off AIDS. As both a memoir along the lines of "My Most Unforgettable Genomic Researches" and an introduction to what is going to be an increasingly important method of understanding our world's biology, _Tears of the Cheetah_ is a real success. The really tantalizing prospect, however, the main message of the book, is that humans and animals may have a genetic store of disease-fighting capacity that is only beginning to be understood, and has tremendous potential for improving health worldwide.

Stories combining wildlife, genetics and emerging diseases

The bits of the book I have read so far have been interesting and fun to read. I think the reader from Seattle with the poor spelling skills who believes that wildlife conservation is a "special interest" should quit griping in his anonymous envy of O'Brien, who has produced hundreds of scientific papers furthering our understanding of human diseases, in many cases by studying related diseases in wildlife. Many of the stories are highly interesting. Read the book.

Fascinating!

I enjoyed the book very much.I would recommend it highly for anyone who has an interest in understanding basic genetics or for someone who is just interested in learning something new. Dr. O'Brien is a wonderful story teller and writes in a language that is easily understandable. He slowly introduces the concepts in an interesting progressive manner which enables the reader to understand the more advanced concepts toward the end of the book. I thought the book was truly fascinating.
