Nostalgia and the true horrors of adolescence

Being new to Brian Keene's books, I was recommended Ghoul by my mother who is an avid horror reader as being a "MUST READ". Usually she's right but man was did this book take me by surprise. It's one part Stand by Me, one part IT, mixed in with a fully fleshed out story that feels authentic and visceral. The contrast from childhood innocence and true horrors (those both human and other alike) truly make this book worth investing in. The characters are believable and genuine, and the "monsters" things made from nightmares. I won't give anything away, but I must say that this was a well worth read and I can't wait to see what other treasures Mr. Keene has in his collection.

Read it in a well lit room if you want to NOT dream about monsters. Aside from Keene's creative genius, this isn't your parents monster under the bed story. It's brutal, violent, and disturbing.

While many parents, teachers and students revel in the static conservatism of education as we have come to know it, Hedley Beare sounds the clarion trumpet blast of a paradigm shift. Beare's creative analysis of future trends is not new but his contribution is that he makes great sense in translating those trends to school operations.
The story of Angelica, the future's child, personalizes the changes that will affect the children of this Century and it reiterates the coming globalisation that will be a reality to this next generation.
The section on teachers as knowledge workers emphasises what has long been ignored by writers in the business management sector. If we are to become a learning society then we need to re-examine the role of teachers and schools in our society. Beare reminds us that with all teachers (in Australia) holding four year degrees from universities, teaching is moving from a craft to a profession.
The book is well worth a place in school administrators' professional reading lists. And, the theses Beare proposes will help principals get their heads around the big picture and the new world of opportunities.

Man's worst mortal fear is the fear of facing an unknown future. As the world is changing at a maddening pace, teachers may feel themselves particularly vulnerable. Chartered with the honourable yet onerous task of preparing the future lawyers, doctors, architects or economic pillars in their communities, teachers cannot escape the duty to try to create the "future schools" campatible with the new mode of living in a global village. From the very first pages, I was made a captive reader. Through the eye's of the five-year old Angelica, I saw graphically how the evolving scenes would require the rude awakening of many education workers to build a new vision for education. Fortunately, the author Hedley Beare was quite forthcoming about definitive approaches that teachers could adopt. Unlike authors who dodge the real issues and couch their recommendations in a nest of "ifs", the author overtook the gloomy preamble to paint a plausible frame for action. In summary, this book is highly recommended for educators whose crystal ball is cloudy as they are plunged into the unknown known as the knowledged base society.

The author of six textbooks and many articles, she has taught in special education and alternative education classrooms and continues to consult with school districts across the country. A former faculty member at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Kerr joined the faculty of the School of Medicine and the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980.

In 1989, Dr. Kerr joined the Pittsburgh City Schools as Director of Pupil Services, where she administered services such as guidance, counseling, social work, drug-free schools, alternative education, health services, school security, and discipline. In 1994, she returned to her faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh, where she is Educational Director and Associate Professor of Child Psychiatry and Education. She also directs outreach services for the University's youth suicide and violence prevention center, STAR-Center. This center provides crisis response services, training, and consultation to school districts and communities across Pennsylvania.

In 1996 Dr. Kerr was appointed by the United States Court for the Central District of California as a Consent Decree Administrator for Los Angeles Unified School District. In this capacity, Dr. Kerr works with educators and parents to improve services for 81,000 students with disabilities.

When Dr. Kerr is not at work in Pittsburgh orLos Angeles, she is at home with her husband Bruce and their two children.

"C. Michael Nelson" began his special education career as a teacher of adolescents with learning and behavior disorders. After earning a master's degree in school psychology, he worked as a child psychologist at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He received his Ed.D. from the University of Kansas in 1969 and took a position with the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling at the University of Kentucky, where he currently is a full professor and coordinates the graduate Personnel Preparation Program for Teachers of Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities. Dr. Nelson has authored or edited over 100 professional publications, including books, textbook chapters, articles in referred journals, and multimedia instructional packages. He has prepared teachers of children and youth with behavior disorders at the pre- and in-service levels and has served as principal investigator on a number of research and personnel preparation grants. He has served as president of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders. Currently, he is involved in two national centers that promote research and best practices for students with or at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders: the Center for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, and the Center for Education, Disability, and Juvenile Justice. He also is associated with the Kentucky Center for School Safety.

Richard A. Gaunt is Lecturer in Modern British History at the University of Nottingham and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He has contributed to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, edited the diaries of a major Ultra-Tory politician of the period, Unhappy Reactionary: The Diaries of the Fourth Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme and a book of contemporary texts concerning Benjamin Disraeli. He is currently writing Conservative Politics in the Age of Reform 1780-1850 (I.B.Tauris).

Excellent Artwork and Visual Aide

Got this deck as a visual aide to upcoming D&D sessions and campaign my husband is designing. Cards are of good quality, has names and details for the characters should you use for Pathfinder system too.

There is a good variety of male and female humanoid characters

I use these cards as representations of NPCs for D&D. There is a good variety of male and female humanoid characters. The backs of the cards feature names and some descriptions. Mostly, I put sticky notes with my own made-up attributes on the backs of them.

The overall print of the packaging and cards is clean and bright. The packaging is thick and provides the right amount of protection for the cards. For the cards themselves, the cut is centered, and the price for variety is about right.

I think I knew what I was getting into when I bought this deck--namely, what was in it and what was not. Yeah, I'd like to have more cards, but Pathfinder offers other interesting decks. At some point in the future, I'll probably invest in some of them just to add to the variety of people and monsters I can bring into the game. Initially, I thought I'd only play with a handful of these NPCs, but as I shuffle through the deck, I'm always coming up with new stories for the faces.

So here's my only complaint: The cards feel the slightest bit lightweight. I might describe them as just slightly more bendable than a playing card or a card from a nice Euro board game. When you play a lot of games, you start to get a sense for these kinds of things. I suppose they start functioning like a minimum standard of quality. I would really have liked to have something a little more durable.

Still, for what these cards have to offer, they're a great buy.
