Amphibians of Central America
By Dr. Jay M. Savage
I strongly recommend this book as a first-rate field companion for anyone interested in tropical amphibians, especially those from Central America. The illustrations alone will make easy recognition of most species in life. It is especially useful for areas of Mesoamerica for which there are no major works and/or field guides (southern Mexico,Guatemala, and Panama.

Remarkably detailed and extremely useful
By dibamus1
Dr. Kohler's "Amphibians of Central America" is an extremely informative and welcome addition to the growing number of herpetological field guides being produced for Central America. The level of detail put into the identification keys, the drawings and key features photos to which the identification keys frequently refer, and the citations for further reading, are particularly impressive and useful for their intended purposes.
As to be expected when compiling such a tremendous amount of detailed information, there were a few minor editorial errors. For example, some of the numbers on the identification keys do not correctly match up to the applicable drawings or key features photos. Most of the distribution maps are relatively accurate, although some of the base maps depict the overlapping distributions of several species, resulting in a cluttered appearance. The distributions of Pseudoeurycea nigra, Pseudoeurycea parva, and Craugastor rostralis are not depicted on any maps, whereas the distribution of Bolitoglossa rostrata is depicted on two maps, one of which is mislabeled as Bolitoglossa hartwegi. While the dot maps presumably represent the distributions of species known from highly disjunct localities, several of these species are also known from multiple localities between the distantly located dots, and hence the distributions for these species may be more accurately depicted with solid coloration that connects all of the peripheral dots. Overall, the specimen photos are of relatively high quality, several of which depict extremely rare and seldom photographed species, and provide some additional assistance with identification when used in conjunction with the keys. However, several of the specimen photos should have been taken with a stronger flash or at a different angle.
Most of the above issues can be readily addressed in subsequent revisions, and are rather insignificant when considering the quality of the overall product. Indeed, I found this book to be invaluable during a recent visit throughout southeastern Mexico, and I would have been far more competent in my amphibian identifications if I had it during earlier visits to other countries in Central America. In summary, this book represents an indispensable and monumental contribution to the identification of amphibians in Central America, and will be a valuable tool in helping to guide and promote additional detailed work on this fascinating, yet highly imperiled and understudied group of animals.

"Amphibians of Central America" by Dr. Gunther Khler is a hard covered book published by Herpeton in 2011. The book covers all aspects of amphibian herpetofauna from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to southern Panama. With 930 color photographs, 92 drawings and diagrams, and 177 maps the composition demonstrates on 379 pages an impressive assembly of details and facts and gives the latest taxonomy of caecilians, salamanders, frogs, and toads of Central America. Gunther Khler, curator of herpetology of the famous Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, has contributed in numerous original publications to the herpetofauna of Central America. The easy to use book with excellent color photographs is an indispensible guide in the field with which determinations to the species level are accomplished even by the interested amateur. Most of the species are displayed in single distribution maps and characteristics to each family, genus, and species are given with a short summary. Of special interest is a chapter on larval morphology and a key to species of Central American tadpoles. Following a similar volume on the reptiles of this diverse ecoregion "Amphibians of Central America" fills a gap for the enthusiastic herpto-philic traveller as well as for booklovers and amphibian freaks - unconditional and highly recommended!
