About the Author
Karen Miller was born in Vancouver, Canada, and moved to Australia with her family when she was two. Apart from a three-year stint in the UK after graduating from university with a BA in communications, she's lived in and around Sydney ever since. Karen started writing stories while still in elementary school, where she fell in love with speculative fiction. She's held a variety of interesting jobs but now writes full-time.

This book is excellent

I would suggest this book to anyone who isn't squeamish. This has a lot of crude language, violence, and very upsetting scenes in some places. This author is not afraid to abuse her characters. I didn't give it five stars because you have to wade through the beginning before it sucks you in, and because it introduces completely different characters so abruptly in the second book. Everything does come together nicely though.

Review on Godspeaker books one and two.

I have differing feelings on this book. One, it can drag because it feels like the author has the need to literally write everything that happens. This is unnecessary in fiction-just allude to it and we'll understand :)

Two, the worldbuilding is great especially in the first book. Miller is good at creating a fantasy world. I have two words to describe the feel of the first book to you: old testament. Loved it although it was a long read and could've been tightened up.

Three, the best thing about the series is the character Hekat. Ambitious, ruthless, determined, horribly flawed and yet believing in a higher power than herself-she really interested me. She's a wonderful contrast to the uptight and exasperating princess Rhian. I get that the princess is on the "good" side but why does good have to be so boring?? It should be evil to be boring!

Now, I have not yet finished the trilogy (I just started book three) but the first book was better than the second. The second is very repetitive and the main princess character was extremely annoying with her black and white thinking. I thought the constant harping on how she was a woman, and how she refused to get her hands dirty with actual ruling really undermined the author's own message that women are equal to men and can equally wield power. I often skimmed book two for this reason because the princess was exhausting to read. Maybe this changes in the third book, I hope so.

It seems like Miller was trying to probe the themes of power, gender, and religion, but instead of exploring the grey areas of these issues instead seemed to pick sides. Thus boring Rhian on the good side with her "good" god and headstrong Hekat on the bad side with her "bad" god. Oh, and the "good" god will remind you a lot of a certain god we are all familiar with, which I thought was also annoying...

Overall, I liked the STORY, if not how it was actually executed, and the story was worth it to me. If you would like to read about a good character and an interesting (yes, male-dominated and sometimes offensive) fantasy world, I would recommend book one of this trilogy :)

One of a kind read, but I found myself losing interest as books continued

I purchased this series all as one book. While it began strong, it faded fast. I found myself halfway through the series with little desire to continue forward. I lost interest fast. I did, however, manage to finish this. It was long, and there was a lot of irrelevant information and details. I found it overall to be tiring, and I can't say it’s a series Id personally recommend. I enjoyed the original concept, and creativeness this offered, but that’s about all I appreciated regarding this series. It just seemed to go on and on.................... I tired of the plot and characters before completing book 2. I should have just stopped there.

Well-Written Introductory Text

The book contains concepts and algorithms in the first half, and then lists (I think 3) distributed operating systems in the back as case studies. The book is very readable and entertaining, assuming you've had a course (or the equivalent) in (single machine) operating systems.
This book covers all major aspects of distributed operating systems at reasonable level of depth -- you can't expect too much detail if you're going to cover all the topics.
There's no examples of "real" code in the text, I think that's a good thing. There are a number of useful algorithms discussed in each chapter.
This book is aging, and a little of the information is already dated (7 years old).

Easy to read introduction to the subject

This book is a convenient alternative to a senior-level course in operating systems. I intend to buy Tanenbaum's other operating system book. It is very easy to read and refreshingly pithy. Unlike many technical books, which fill pages by reproducing online documentation as an appendix, every page was worth printing. The examples are complete enough to understand the core concepts but assume you have the intelligence not to need excessive handholding. References are provided for readers interested in learning more about specific concepts.

The major flaw with this book is that it is now more than 15 years old. I would like to see an updated version that takes into account some of the latest operating system research. That said, the concepts are fundamental ones and cover most of the issues discussed are still relevant today.

About the Author
Andy Blade was the frontman of Eater, a London punk band of the mid 1970s perhaps best remembered for having an even more magnificently named (and pre-pubescent) drummer, one Dee Generate. They appeared on the seminal "Roxy, London WC2" album singing Alice Cooper's "Eighteen," title changed to "Fifteen" to reflect their schoolboy status.

Is this an Audio CD or a Book?

I'm looking for the book referenced in Henry Rollins Fanatic! on page 71. Since Henry's book is from 2004 I can only presume this is the book he is referencing, but Amazon's description is calling it both an Audio CD and a book. If Rollins recommends it, it's worth getting, presuming this item is a book. Someone should correct this entry.

Loved it.Full of great stories - this is what a "rock memoirs" should be -- it puts you right in his teenage shoes. Andy Blade is a terrific and very funny writer. If you're a fan of Eater and '77 Punk and you love to read books about that era, this is well worth finding - I tracked a copy down on Ebay for $40 whereas most sellers are asking upwards of $100 for it. If you have the dough, go for it - you will love this book. And yeah, he pulls no punches in his opinions for people he new back then: Johnny Rotten, etc. Bravo Andy Blade!

At last a methodologically rigorous study of alcoholism

I first acquired this book shortly after it was published in 1991, and I have now been continuously sober for over eleven years. The hypothesis that alcoholism is an empirically identifiable neurochemical imbalance in the brain is still met with strong resistance by drunks, moralists and many therapists. Unfortunately for these sometimes vocal critics, Blum and Payne present compelling laboratory evidence that it is as much a neurological disorder as Parkinson's or epilepsy.

Excellent Explanation of Alcoholism Neurochemistry and Genetics, Reward Deficiency Syndrome, Alcohol Metabolism , Craving

Alcohol and the Addictive Brain is possibly the best published explanation of genetic and neurochemical causes of alcohol dependence, withdrawal and craving. This book is surprisingly readable, considering the complexity of the research it explains.

This book explains how genetically susceptible individuals, differ neurochemically from nonalcoholics, and how alcohol alters dopamine, GABA, serotonin, norepinephrine and opiate neurotransmitter and neurotransmitter receptor levels. Inherited differences in P300 brainwaves are thoroughly explained. The history of alcohol neurotransmitter research is reported, objectively, with fair consideration given to opposing views.

Enkephalinase inhibition treatments, which Blum has refined, are an especially promising possibility for reducing alcohol craving and dependence. The explanation of transformation of alcohol to acetaldehyde, and subsequently to beta carboline, tetrahydroisoquinolines, morphine, codeine and other opiates, remains useful today and helps explain why naltrexone and accupuncture can reduce alcohol craving and consumption.

Wider comprehension of the neurochemical concepts explained in this book, could help alcohol treatment advance beyond the slide rule era technology, which most treatment programs persist in providing.

Unfortunately, this book appears to be out of print.

Author Wendi Silvano was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has lived in Oregon, Colorado and Peru. Lee Harper is a children’s book author/illustrator living with his family in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Recent favorite at our house! Turkey is Tremendous!

Let me start by saying our bookshelves are overflowing with picture books! I am certifiably a children's book addict. I'm happy to say that this one has not made it to the shelf yet because my kids keep requesting me to read it- yes everynight! I'm also happy to say that I am not tired of it yet. My kids giggle at the creative illustrations by Lee Harper and the funny & fabulous use of words by Wendy Silvano "Holy Cow Turkey!" My daughter has a birthday party today and she picked this book to give as a present which thrilled me! There is truly nothing better than giving or getting books as birthday or holiday gifts, except of course books signed by the author or illustrator :) or a book paired with a pair of pajamas!

Great book for teaching cause & effect

As a speech therapist who primarily works with 4th and 5th graders with a wide range of learning disabilities, I thought this book was the perfect way to target cause and effect relationships with my students. My students were highly motivated by the kindle app format and overall they thought the book was very funny. Also, there are a number of free resources on Teacher Pay Teachers that coincide with this story which is always a huge plus for any frugal educator.

The information in this book turned my life around.

I became interested in Dr. Johnson's work 5 years ago. In 1993 I had thyroid surgery for a tumor and was placed on thyroid hormones. Even after all of that my health continued to worsen. I am a chiropractor and an acupuncturist and I felt I tried everything to help myself and had seen many physicians to get to the cause of my deteriorating health. Basically my life consisted of working, eating and staying in bed. I was not getting any help.

I was seeing similar problems with other family members and many of my patients. I learned about Dr. Johnson through one of our industry journals. I joined his Neurometabolic Super Group in 2009 and began learning the information and protocols in this book. I got the proper testing done and we began managing my health. Long story short I work full time now and I feel better and my lab tests prove I am healthier than I was when I was 35. I now use and teach these protocols to my patients on a daily basis. It is so satisfying to be healthy again and know that I have the ability to change the lives of my patients.

Dr. Johnson has changed the lives of thousands of patients he has never met by sharing this information. I am forever indebted to him.

It is a must book to have when you want to learn more about thyroid

This book is easy to read. It covers and deals with all health aspects. For example, dental and EMF get to do with thyroid. it is not only about autoimmune, but also we have to address the infection and inflammation that cause the body to be imbalance.

Hyperthyroidism and nodules

I am subclinical hyperthyroidism and have a benign nodule. No medication taken. The recommended tests provided in this book I found helpful .. . I am searching for natural cures and Dr. Johnson has paved the way! I gave 4 stars based on hyperthyroid and nodule information....I still want to know more.

Kevin B. Korb is a Reader in the Clayton School of Information Technology at Monash University in Australia. He earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University. His research encompasses causal discovery, probabilistic causality, evaluation theory, informal logic and argumentation, artificial evolution, and philosophy of artificial intelligence.

Ann E. Nicholson an Associate Professor in the Clayton School of Information Technology at Monash University in Australia. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Oxford. Bayesian Networks for Undergrads and Practicioners

Despite its name "Bayesian Artificial Intelligence" covers Bayesian network (BN) techniques only. Other Bayesian techniques useful for AI are not treated.
The content is divided in three main sections: (1) The basics of probabilistic reasoning with BNs, (2) Causal discovery (finding BNs from data), and (3) "Knowledge engineering".
The first part covers the fundamental concepts and algorithms around BNs and (simple) decision networks. It is well-written and clear, but readers who are not totally new to the field might find only little new information (e.g., loopy belief propagation, continuous densities, large decision networks, etc. are not covered).
The second part is on how to deduce causal relationships from observational data. Constrained-based and Bayesian approaches are covered, but on a rather general level. I am not sure how easy it is to implement the algorithms from the descriptions provided. When it comes to details of the algorithms, proofs, or mathematical background the authors very often refer to the literature due to "lack of space". From a practical standpoint, it is unfortunate that the different methods are compared to each other only superfiscially. For instance, one method presented performs a large number of statistical tests; one would expect that this requires large amounts of data in order to avoid false positive results. Is this a problem? With questions like these the reader is often left alone.
I am not competent to talk about part three (knowledge engineering), so I end with my general impression of the book: I would have appreciated if the authors had treated some the algorithms in greater detail and had spent a few pages on advanced concepts and current research directions. On the other hand, some information provided could have easily been left out. (For instance, how to download and install certain software packages from the internet, Kevin Murphy's well-known survey on BN software packages, screenshots of user dialogs, etc. just eat pages. Providing the URLs to the corresponding sites on the internet is completely sufficient, and the information there is more likely to be up-to-date.) The saved pages could then be spent on information which is not readily available elsewhere.
To summarize: The book provides a mostly well-written general overview of the basic concepts and could serve as a first introduction to the field. However, it leaves the reader often alone when it comes to the mathematical background, potential practical pittfalls, or advanced algorithms.

Excellent Introductory Text

It is difficult to assess a review without understanding the biases of the reviewer. I fall under the category of researcher/practitioner when it comes to reasoning with graphical models. I am familiar with and make use of several books and papers on this topic in my work. Of the set of standard references (Pearl, Jensen, Neapolitan, Jordan, Cowell et al., Borgelt & Kruse) the text by Korb and Nicholson (K&N) stands out in terms of its clarity and accessibility. Does the book have everything one would ever want to know about Bayesian inference? Not by a long shot. Is it, however, a good place to start? Definitely. The basic concepts are presented relatively completely and with clarity. I consistently recommend K&N over other alternatives to colleagues new to the field. Is there a chasm separating concept and algorithm in the book? I don't think there is, especially relative to other references. With tools such as Kevin Murphy's BNT, or Netica available on the Web, it seems to me that providing a solid conceptual framework becomes paramount for a textbook such as this. I believe K&N succeed admirably in this sense. Why four stars and not five? Even for an introductory text such as K&N, it would be nice to have more development of some concepts such as causality, context specific independence, or loss of independence in dynamic nets. Although it won't be your last book on reasoning with graphical models, K&N should probably be your first.

Practical and Engaging Primer to Bayesian AI

Bayesian Artificial Intelligence, Second Edition by Kevin B. Korb and Ann E. Nicholson is among one of the very few books which explain the probabilistic graphical models and Bayesian belief networks in a balanced way; i.e. without making it a mathematical exercise in futility or by dumbing it down too much to make it a `practical guide'. This book is an interesting read and knowing the KDD genre, it's few and far between when one can say these words about a machine learning book.
Bayesian Artificial Intelligence is organized into three main sections; probabilistic reasoning, learning causal models and knowledge engineering. The book discusses Bayesian networks as a function of their usage i.e. for reasoning, learning and inference. Book begins with an introduction to Probabilistic Reasoning where authors discusses Bayesian reasoning, reasoning under uncertainty, uncertainty in artificial intelligence, probability calculus and other related concepts. Authors then provide a primer of Bayesian networks before discussing inference in Bayesian Networks. In the chapter titled applications of Bayesian network, authors elaborate on different types of applications and their practical implementations. In the second part authors focus on learning the causal models, learning the probabilities from datasets, Bayesian Network classifiers, learning linear causal models, learning discrete causal structure and so on. The third section concentrates on knowledge engineering with Bayesian Network; it has a long chapter which talks about different aspects of knowledge engineering for example KEBN life cycle, Bayesian network modeling, how Bayesian structure is build, kept and developed etc. Finally we see the case studies for different sections and the software packages associated with it.

I personally really enjoyed this book mainly because it's to the point, precise and well written. Due to the wide range of the field of machine learning and implementation of Belief networks, it becomes quite challenging to comprehensively cover the area. If you would like to read more about the general graphical models and probabilistic graphical models in machine learning, there are other texts out there however if your focus is Bayesian Artificial Intelligence and the belief networks, this book is quite useful.

The book is not written as a typical text book but still provides a set of problems at the end of each chapter. For theorem solvers and theory lovers, there are also various theoretical issues discussed in this book throughout related to the Bayesian provability and probability calculus. Overall it is not a so called `math heavy' or theorem proving text but rather quite practical introduction to Bayesian AI. I highly recommend this book if you would like to learn Bayesian AI, Bayesian belief networks, Bayesian inference, learning, reasoning or any pertaining disciplines.

Serra’s mission: to spread Christianity in this unknown world by building churches wherever possible and by converting the native peoples to the Word of God. It was an undertaking that seemed impossible, given the vast distances, the challenges of the unforgiving landscape, and the danger posed by resistant native tribes. Such a journey would require bottomless physical stamina, indomitable psychic strength, and, above all, the deepest faith. Serra, a diminutive man with a stout heart, possessed all of these attributes, as well as an innate humility that allowed him to see the humanity in native people whom the West viewed as savages.

By his death at age seventy-one, Serra had traveled more than 14,000 miles on land and sea through the New World—much of that distance on a chronically infected and painful foot—baptized and confirmed 6,000 Indians, and founded nine of California’s twenty-one missions, with his followers establishing the rest. The names of these missions ring through the history of California— San Diego, San Jose, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Clara, and San Francisco—and served as the epicenters of the arrival of Western civilization, where millions more would follow, creating the California we know today.

An impoverished son, an inspired priest, and a potent political force, Serra was a complex man who stood at the historic crossroads between Native Americans, the often brutal Spanish soldiers, and the dictates of the Catholic Church, which still practiced punishment by flogging. In this uncertain, violent atmosphere, Serra sought to protect the indigenous peoples from abuse and to bring them the rituals and spiritual comfort of the Church even as the microbes carried by Europeans threatened their existence.

One merely has to look at the place names in modern California to confirm the enduring legacy of the Spanish colonization of the area. To a great extent, the initial success of that effort to “civilize” California was due to the labors in the eighteenth century of the Franciscan priest Junipero Serra. Driven by intense religious devotion and a restless, adventurous spirit, Serra abandoned a promising and secure teaching position in Spain in 1749 to sail to the New World. After 15 years as an administrator and preacher in Mexico City, he began the work of founding a series of missions in Alta (upper) California. Here Orfalea reveals the sheer toughness, courage, and even fanaticism of his subject, as Serra founds a series of missions, often traveling in solitude while plagued by a severely ulcerated leg. As Orfalea acknowledges, the results for the Indians who were attached to the missions were mixed and certainly did not prevent the demographic collapse of the Indian population. About the Author
Gregory Orfalea was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and educated at Georgetown University and the University of Alaska. He has held teaching positions at Georgetown, The Claremont Colleges, and at Westmont College. Orfalea is the author and editor of eight books, the most recent of which are the short story collection The Man Who Guarded the Bomb and Angeleno Days, which won the 2010 Arab American Book Award and has been named a Finalist for the PEN USA Award in Creative Nonfiction.

Where the "San" came from

This is a fabulous study of early California history in the late 18th century. You will be taken on a journey of discovery, secular quest, political struggle between Spanish administration & religious quest, and more importantly understand the end result: the suffering & Christian transformation of the aboriginal people who comprised the land we know as California. The primary character: Friar Junipero Serra was a deeply devoted aging Franciscan tasked as a missionary to bring the pagan natives into the fold of the Church and develop into loyal subjects of the Spanish empire. King Charles the III, recently diminished the power of the Jesuits (who typically were the missionaries), and looked to the Franciscan's to seek out and grow the Church & Empire.

The North American west course was vital to Spain's growth to build trade with the Philippines. Serra a self-flagellating pious Friar in his mid- 50's was assigned to lead the Franciscan effort to grow the Catholic religion and establish the Church in this new land. In spite of the local Spanish government and military disruptions - Serra was able to establish nine missions, and baptized 6000 people. He also converted the natives from nomads into herders & farmers. The new communities thrive with the new existence, but later many died from European disease with venereal disease being the leading cause of death. The Friars of course acted upon extreme measures to control the spread - locking up young women at night and flogging those in relationships. Serra worked himself to death eventually, but thought iron willed devotion planted the seeds of Cathoism which remains strong to this day in modern California.

The author did a great job developing this time into a very readable format that describes the tough character and will of Serra, and his very strong influence on American history.

Read the Story Behind that Sugar-Cube Mission You Made in Middle School

Every kid who grows up in the Bay Area has probably seen the statue of Junipero Serra along 280, as well as had the assignment of building a mission of one's choice out of sugar cubes. (My sister and I joked about starting a black market site when her kids hit the age: "I'll trade you a Mission Santa Barbara for a San Juan Capistrano.") But that was the extent of my knowledge.

Now that I live in WA State, when I heard about this book, I was hit with a wave of nostalgia and quickly put it on my to-read list. I'm glad I did! Author Gregory Orfolea has written a lyrical, sympathetic, and fascinating portrait of a brave and compassionate visionary who lived in exciting times. (The book reminded me several times of another favorite, Willa Cather's DEATH COMES FOR THE ARCHBISHOP.)

Can I say how glad I am that we're past the stage we were in when I was in grad school, where Colonialists = Vicious Murderers Who Did Everything Wrong and Natives = Utopian Residents in a State of Nature? Orfolea did an even-handed job representing the cultural factors at play on each side.

Having only seen Mission San Jose in Fremont, Serra's story made me want to schedule a road trip this summer to check out some of the other Serra-founded ones within reach, not to mention putting Mexico City on the bucket list.

Who knew that he only began his "Alta California" work when he was 56? (Take that, early retirement!)That he suffered for the rest of his life from a spider bite received when he landed in Veracruz, Mexico, upon reaching the New World? That male California Indians went around buck naked, and only added breechcloths after encounters with the Spanish? That explorer DeAnza was the one who noticed and marked "El Palo Alto," which I drove past every stinking day for years?

Lots of goodies in here. If you like CA history, the Spanish Conquest, and sympathetic Catholic history, give this book a try.

What was California like BEFORE the Gold Rush?

I grew up in California and went East to college. Our home was in the Sacramento Valley, near the Mother Lode, and my great grandparents on both sides settled in Santa Barbara in the 1800s. In New England it is taken for granted that America's early history was all home-grown and a local phenomenon. California, they assumed, had the Beach Boys ..... and that was about it.

But I've cared about Junipero Serra since I was a little kid, visiting relatives near the Santa Barbara Mission. Too many years later, my wife and I have loved to travel. Often, although I'm not very religious, we find ourself walking in Father Serra's footsteps. We've been to his birthplace in Petra, Mallorca, to Baja California churches such as the one in Loreto, and of course to most of the California missions. My most recent birthday was spent on an over-night at Hearst's Hacienda at Camp Hunter Liggett, in the shadow of Serra's third mission. A month ago we enjoyed every station of the Huntington Library's Father Serra exhibit. Of course I purchased Professor Hackel's history ("Junipero Serra") and quickly consumed it.

"Journey to the Sun" explores Junipero Serra's life and what it meant to California. I could feel the Franciscan's pain on the rough and risky trails he chose, and Author Orfalea makes very clear the devotion that drove Serra forward. He paints a vivid picture of what California was like at the very time New England was holding it's American Revolution. One chapter is devoted almost entirely to describing how the native people lived BEFORE the arrival of these Spanish holy men and soldiers.

This is not a "revisionist history". The missionaries meant not to subjugate the Indians, but to save their souls. They were also frail human beings who failed in some important ways. Junipero Serra struggled against unimaginable hurdles and hardships. Professor Orfalea brings it all to life.
