EXCELLENT! A great call to action on a very important topic!
By Oliver Schinkten
This book is amazing!
I am very critical and extremely passionate about education and improving the quality of education for all children. I read books about education nonstop with mixed feelings. The majority of education books include fluffy theory that sounds good on paper, but is nearly impossible to implement in the classroom. This book is not one of those! This book is one that should help to transform education into a more relevant and engaging practice that truly prepares our students for the real world.
In this book, Erik Palmer makes two things very clear:
1. Speaking & Listening are very important skills that are critical for success in the exponentially changing real-world.
2. Speaking & Listening are skills that are often taken for granted and are, therefore, neglected to be taught in schools.
This book is full of current real-world examples of the types of speaking and listening skills that must be taught to students. It also offers easy-to-implement ways in which teachers can include this instruction in the classroom. The book constantly links these skills to real-world scenarios including collaboration, multimedia, and questioning/reasoning. This is refreshing because current relevance is something that is needed to help engage students.
This book should be mandatory reading for all educators. It is the type of book that as an educator and parent I look at and say "YES!". If you truly want to prepare children, or yourself, for the 21st Century Skills necessary for success, this book will not disappoint.

By Katherine S. Geible
I have just started reading Erik's newest book, having already read and used information from his other books on speaking. His materials have provided me with a structure for teaching speech to middle school students and the corporation has adopted his PVLEGS approach to speaking for every grade level. I am currently focused on his chapter on developing active listening skills. My hope is to add this to my classes and share it with the other staff members at the high school. It has helped me to focus on the need to systematically, intentionally instruct students how to focus on their listening skills. He refers to the idea that roughly 60% of communication these days in listening based. Consider technology-based conferences and webinars as experiences of the 21st century. As he has in his other materials, he provides practical applications and guides the reader to ways to approach the skill. I also appreciate how he summarizes the Core requirements by grade level from grades 1 through 12 so I can see how the skills scaffold.

A good primer

I simply didn't get a lot out of this one...I have read other books on student-led discussions and this book seemed to be more life a "cliff notes" version. Not at all bad, but no silver bullet found.
