Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. �One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. �A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. �He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. �He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation.

Randolph W.Westerfield is Dean Emeritus of the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business and is the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and a member of the finance faculty for 20 years.

Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and holder of the Richard W. and Janis H. Furst Endowed Chair in Finance at the University of Kentucky. He has a longstanding interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy.�

I have a love-hate relationship with this book. Whether you are taking this online or in class, I would recommend getting the tangible book, even if your " course key" includes an ebook. For me, mainly because it was online, Finance was a challenge. It is the next level of Accounting and will require your full attention and use of all the resources provided to you. Some of the examples were difficult to follow, that is, how the writer came to certain conclusions or solutions, so I had to reread often to understand the material. The rental version did not include an access code so I had to buy that separately, and the only option there was automatically came with the ebook. It was expensive so I used my credit card in order to make payments, but I would recommend this in addition to an included ebook or just the access code if finance does not come naturally to you.

This book was pretty well written, but had all the wrong answers to the questions in the answer section. Totally inexcusable. Horrible editing. Ruined what would have been a pretty good textbook.

Great little book packed with information

I am extremely satisfied. This book has been very helpful to me. After struggling with lots of manuals that focused on design or mechanics and were overly technical, it has been a blessing to find something that you can actually put to use and is has been written for the layman. I particularly loved the graphs on fuel expenditures vs. load and the installation guidelines to avoid sabotaging your own generator into low performance, as I have done with mine.

Although it mentions such projects, I find the "in development projects" in the title may be misleading. The vast majority of the text applies to any generator. "For owners" may have been better.

I enjoyed this book and found it very informative. Anyone who is in need of information about generator sizing, efficiency and set-up in a rural environment should check this book out. It is a quick read and suited to anyone looking for clear information about operating a generator. It does not however give much detail as to engine selection or building a generator for custom applications although some of the basics are there.

looked like it had been handled roughly and there were a ...

The book, even though a rental, looked like it had been handled roughly and there were a couple of loose pages in the middle, they hadn't come off completely, but I am not sure if they will still be in tact by the end of the semester from the way they look. . I took pictures when I first used it 4 days after I received it which was the first time I had used it. It looks like the book had been opened and the front half bent backward under the back half making it seem as if the book is almost in 2 pieces. but attached with glue at the spine.

So, too, did they for the Russians, whose vast Empire required rail links capable of moving the Tsarist army quickly and competently. Just as importantly, railways could be vital for Imperial defence, as the British discovered on the North-West frontier of India.

Written 45 years ago, this biography is still the best we have on the great inventor. Josephson focuses as much on Edison's work as he does on the man, and the book can be somewhat technical at times. It is natural to compare it to Neil Baldwin's EDISON: INVENTING THE CENTURY, written in 1995, and Josephson's Edison is much more solid than Baldwin's. Baldwin sacrifices the inventions while dealing mainly with the man; Josephson is much more rounded and deals with all aspects of Edison's life. Highly recommended.

I had been looking for something to get me past the grade school biographies that I remember reading about Edison -- this is the best biography of the inventor that I have read. Not only does it dispell many of the myths surrounding Edison (he didn't come up with the idea for the incandesent lamp; he was not made deaf by a conductor chastising him for a fire with his chemistry set), but it highlights his major work not in individual inventions, but in combining his inventions into systems ... that were both practical and profitable.
The book is very readable, and goes into just enough depth about his personal life (of which he had very little) and his public and professional lives. The only negative is that because it was written in the early 1950's, it is missing a perspective that could be added by 50 more years of luxuriating in the lifestyle which Edison has made possible.

Still Readable

"It's still burning" was the phrase repeated as the light bulb stayed lit longer and longer. The same phrase was used by Edison's son to keep the death-vigil crowds informed as the great man lay dying, as relayed by this author. Unlike the Edison method of great volumes of empirical data patiently sifted down in huge experiments, the author deftly moves in and out of topics in a refreshingly constrained manner, which he really has to do to keep his book medium-length and still cover a lot.
The middle to the end of the book explores some very important themes, where there are irreconcilable problems with some of Edison's later inventions and the marketability of the resulting products. Like the ore-smashing enterprise in New Jersey, which worked, but not at a market profit. Same thing with the goldenrod-into-rubber operation in Florida.
These then become background for some surprisingly sensitive observations on Edison, made by his friends John Burroughs and Henry Ford. Ford is too sentimental to shut down the funding of the hopeless goldenrod operation; and Burroughs gently points out how Edison in his later years at least, contradicted his personal core-beliefs about sleeping and eating food (He sleeps till 10 am, "bolts half a pie," dumps tons of sugar in his coffee, then lectures on how Americans should eat less and sleep less).
The disconnect which also developed between Edison and his children is developed against the backdrop of Edison's inability to relate to the scale and demands of the electric power industry which he helped create. At his core, as the author shows, Edison's ability to do things was not necessarily transferable to others, including his children. The first batch of kids went kind of bad, and the group from marriage #2 turned out better because wife #2 was more strict and traditional than Edison.
Harvard Business Review recently had an article on great leaders, and pointed out that for every narcissistic leader, you need about 100 obsessive-compulsives scurrying around to make things really work. Each type needs the other to get anything done. This seems to have been the case with Edison, who in addition to being headstrong and creative, had the essential gifts described by Henry Ford as necessary to get anything done: also have "the soul of an Irish construction foreman and a Jewish broker." Or something like that.

Loads of helpful info. Before buying be aware, this is primarily a step by step guide of how to plan your trip and has little about what to do when you're actually in individual cities. I doubt I'll actually bring it with me to Europe. Definitely worth it though!

A well organized travel guide for novices

Fantastic guide for First time European traveler. The book is easy to read and designed in sections, the first half is "Travel Skills" and generally good helpful advice for travel. The second half is specific to each country. It hits the highlights and Rick's rating system for "must see's" is very helpful. I will definitely get the books for specific countries where I will be traveling for a more in depth look at these places. Overall, a very useful travel tool.

BEST BOOK EVER for travelling to Europe!

If you ever want to travel to Europe you could have NO better guide than this one. I watched Rick Steve's television program one night and saw this advertised and it is SO good I've been reading it cover to cover. This is PACKED with GREAT information about how to pack, how to get the best prices, how to enjoy your trip, how to avoid being the victim of a pickpocket, etc., etc., etc. This is worth every single penny you pay for it.
