And it looks at the ways in which materials obstruct, disrupt, or interfere with social norms, emerging as impure formations and messy, unstable substances. It reexamines the notion of "dematerialization"; addresses materialist critiques of artistic production; surveys relationships between matter and bodies, from the hierarchies of gender to the abject and phobic; explores the vitality of substances; and addresses the concepts of intermateriality and transmateriality emerging in the hybrid zones of digital experimentation.

Outstanding, tour de force manual!

This is a superbly written book by true authority. Another book offered by amazon on this subject is very superficial and completely pales in comparison. I am advanced user of meetup, read almost everything available on this subject, so I didn't expect many revelations but I figured out that a couple of new ideas wil be worth the price. Boy, was I wrong. I got so much more! This is outstanding, tour de force manual, offering a in-depth perspective and very practical tips. I am so excited about new possibilities of meetup, and I am just in the middle of the first reading. Highly recommeded.

Great introduction for the beginner

This book is meant to be an introduction for someone that doesnt have a good background in philosophy. It is easy to read and states things in simplistic terms. The author gives many examples from real life situations when he wants to explain an idea. He manages successfully to introduce the reader to Hume's original work. Key passages are quoted and well explained. This is the first book that I have read in the Reader's Guide series and thanks to it I plan to get more titles.

About the Author
Carl T. Bergstrom is a professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Washington in Seattle and a member of the external faculty at the Santa Fe Institute. He received his undergraduate degree in 1993 from Harvard University where he worked with Naomi Price and David Haig, and his PhD in 1998 from Stanford University where he worked with Marc Feldman. His postdoctoral work was done with Bruce Levin at Emory University. Dr. Bergstrom’s research uses mathematical models and evolutionary theory to understand biological and social processes on scales from intracellular information processing to the population-wide spread of emerging infectious diseases. In addition to teaching the undergraduate evolution course at the University of Washington, Dr. Bergstrom teaches courses on evolution and medicine, game theory and animal behavior, and mathematical biology.

Lee Alan Dugatkin is a professor and Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Biology at the University of Louisville. His main area of research is the evolution of social behavior. He is currently studying the evolution of cooperation, aggression, antibiotic resistance, risk-taking behavior, and the interaction between genetic and cultural evolution. Dr. Dugatkin is the author of over 145 articles on evolution and behavior in journals such as Nature and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and several trade monographs on the evolution of cooperation and the history of science. He is also the author of Principles of Animal Behavior, Second Edition.

Coal accounts for approximately one quarter of world energy consumption. Of the coal produced worldwide, approximately 65% is shipped to electricity producers and 33% to industrial consumers, and most of the remainder goes to consumers in the residential and commercial sectors. The total share of total world energy consumption by coal is expected to increase to almost 30% in 2035.

This handbook describes the challenges and steps by which electricity is produced from coal and deals with the challenges for removing the environmental objections to the use of coal in future power plants. New technologies are described that could virtually eliminate the sulfur, nitrogen, and mercury pollutants that are released when coal is burned for electricity generation. In addition, technologies for the capture of greenhouse gases emitted from coal-fired power plants are described and the means of preventing such emissions from contributing to global warming concerns.

About the Author

James G. Speight is a senior fuel consultant and Visiting Professor at the University of Trinidad and Tobago and Adjunct Professor of Chemical and Fuels Engineering at the University of Utah, USA. He is recognized internationally as an expert in the characterization, properties, and processing of conventional and synthetic fuels and has more than 40 years of experience in the process industries. He is the author of numerous books and papers and the editor on the Journal of Sustainable Energy Engineering, and he has won numerous awards and distinctions.
