About the Author
Mike McCready is the lead guitarist for, and one of the founding members of, rock band Pearl Jam. He is also a member of side-project bands Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, and The Rockfords. In addition to Pearl Jam, McCready currently plays with friends in Flight to Mars, a UFO tribute band which does charity events. When not performing live, McCready scores TV and film projects which have included The Glamour & the Squalor, Shameless, Fat Kid Rules the World, Hawaii Five-O, Fringe, and The Westsiders.

Purchase this book, it's a collectors item filled with hundreds of great candid photos of musical legends

Bought this book as an extra Bday gift for my hubby, but not before thumbing through it first. Great purchase and great price point too. Mike captures his world through several decades with what looks to be the same trusted polaroid camera. Who doesn't love a guy who is comfortable and funny enough to cross dress for a photo? I cracked up! The photos brought out several emotions white thumbing through the pages of the many legends we have lost over the years, especially the Soundgarden section (Chris Cornell RIP). Bravo to Mike for keeping it real. If you are a Pearl Jam, grunge and or rock fan period, this is a must have for your collection. Packed with candid never before seen photos shot by Mike with and of many Seattle and international legends. Mike's wife, children and family are a lovely bonus.

Mike McCready rocks in Print too!

Robert R. Barbour was the original creator of Mr. Potato Head in the late 40's

I love Polaroid and have many original models that still work, including a mint Land camera, & SX-70. I loved the fact that Mr. McCready published such a wonderful photo book. I love Pearl Jam's music!
Mr. Potato Head was originally developed by Robert R. Barbour in the late 40's, which he sold to Hasbro and the original design was sold for $500 and was in a cereal box. Robert Barbour sold the rights for his son Leslie Bryan Barbour, and later Robert was a little miffed that Mr. Potato Head became one of the first toys advertised on TV. Ask my wife, Ava, she is Robert R. Barbour's daughter and Leslie was her "Big Brother".

About the Author
Henry Valberg is a professor in the Department of Engineering Science and Materials at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He began his professional career as a metallurgist at LFK, the Royal Norwegian Airforce, and then at A/S Norsk Jernverk, Mo i Rana, and finally as a Research Scientist at SINTEF, Division of Materials and Processes, before joining the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) as a senior lecturer in 1984 and full professor in 1994. He was a visiting professor at Denmark's Technical University in 1997-98. Professor Valberg's main fields of research are materials, metal forming, experimental deformation analysis, and FE analysis. His work covers all main metal forming processes, including forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing, and sheet-metal forming. He is the author of more than 60 refereed journal articles and has supervised numerous graduate students. Valberg is currently a research manager for a forging project run by three Norwegian forging companies.

Easy to Understand and practical

This book is used as one of the main text book for manufacturing course at Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Henry gave this book to me and I am so glad. This book is easy to understand and practical since it is written by the one who is working in this field for years. Valberg has many industrial experiences in metal forming processes that leads him to write a process with a very good understanding. I highly recommend this book to under and post graduate program.

Not as helpful as I would have liked

The book was extensively researched but not very useful as a shopping primer. He has two whole lines in the book comparing hybrid to electric cars but doesn't compare them to biodiesel. This is the biggest reason I bought the book so I can purchase the best vehicle. He rates tea not on the chemicals used or region of the world it was grown but on how much milk you put in it. He rates rice on the efficiency of the farmer but never gives brands of efficiently produced rice. How would anyone know if a particular rice was grown efficiently. He gives the carbon footprint of a car crash, a forest fire , a space shuttle even a heart surgery. I'm sorry but I'm not going to choose to die because of the carbon footprint of a life saving surgery or decide whether to crash my car into a tree because of it either. Exactly what am I suppose to use this information for. There is some interesting things in the book but it is laid out so poorly you have to weed through all kinds of useless facts to get to it. This isn't very helpful for someone wanting to be a greener consumer.

Somewhat interesting, but irritating and fuzzy.

It was a somewhat interesting read, but there are a few things in this book that I just cannot get past:
1. The liberal use of the terms like "guesstimate" and "flaky calculation." I understand that this is not exact... Is it necessary to mention this multiple times on every single page?
2. Lack of continuity. The text jumps around too much. There were places where it mentions things that have not been explained with no reference, and other where it references back to things explained only a few pages back.
3. Inconsistency. Some of the factors considered in calculations for items were completely left out for similar items. No real clear explanation of why, and I can't imagine that there is no impact on conclusions.

An introduction to the 10 ton lifestyle (if you are willing to do your own research)

This reads like a special interests piece for a magazine.

While the set up is easy to follow, the book itself never delves into the depths of the subject. The appendices do a better job of delving in, but I was still left feeling like somebody was quoting sources to me.

I was particularly annoyed by the fact that some of the findings weren't applicable to most people's lives. Though that might just be because I'm american and the author is British. A good example of this is when he discussed boiling potatoes.

While people do boil potatoes to make mashed potatoes, there are other reasons and ways to prepare potatoes, that don't get even a slight mention. What if I wanted to bake a potato, or heat a potato in the microwave? How would those preparations differ in the way of carbon output? There was a minor mention of microwaves taking up less energy, but beyond that I couldn't find another mention of the devices.

Another issue I had was with how he referred to alternate lifestyles. For bike riders, he put up some figures about how what foods you eat, change your carbon output, failing to mention that a person driving a car would still have eaten similar foods and thus were still creating that same ammount of carbon in addition from the carbon footprint of the car. For vegans he claims that he has vegan friends who don't seem to consider that lifestyle a hardship. I'm not saying I expect him to do an indepth explanation of veganism, or bike riding, but I'd have prefered if he actually seemed to pay any attention to different ways a person might choose to lower their carbon footprint.

All of these are minor issues, but since the book claims to show you a true carbon footprint, rather than the 'toeprints' it claims people are used to seeing, I was disappointed with how little the author did to consider multiple lifestyles or personal needs. I think perhaps a better summary of what this book is about would be how to live the author's 10 ton lifestyle.

Too much happy go lucky stuff and no real training techniques that work. Sometimes dogs need their butt kicked and if I didn't kick my dog's butt, I wouldn't have a plant in the ground or anything in reach that wasn't chewed up.

A nice group of websites for business.

The web is so vast that it is nearly impossible to find some of the most useful sites, but somehow this book will point you to quite a few. It is a well formatted and easy to navigate little gem of a book that will have you saying why didn't I know about this site sooner? I downloaded the sample before I bought the book because I really had my doubts as to how good these links would be, but I was hooked and had to purchase it immediately. The author knows his stuff and these sites are not only useful, time saving, and easy to use; but some are entertaining and mostly every one was free (some had upgrade services). A superb purchase for business or even pleasure (if you are a bit on the geeky side). :) One of the best Kindle purchases I have made.

I came across this book during one of my visits to Amit's Agarwarl's blog and am very happy I bought it. The book is short and well-written with lots of very useful websites. It provides the same insightful commentary that has characterised his blog. Finally, it was reassuring to find out that the book listed several websites that I already visit and lots more that I can now add to my toolbox.

I am a bit of an information hound and so this book is just the kind of thing I love. I like that there is a variety of websites to visit with different interests. I very much recommend this book. For academics not the layperson

I just wanted to offer an alternative viewpoint to P.Campbell's review. What they say is correct, in that there is a lot of academic language in this book, but I think only to a degree that is appropriate to the level the book is aimed at.

The book refers to the 'dialectic' of fashion, there's a lot of 'mediating the body' etc, and true, Mr Davis does use the word 'apercu', which I will admit is nearly unforgiveable, when 'perception' would have done just as well.

However overall this book reads in tone pretty similar to an issue of 'Dress, Body, Culture'. It's a standard text for graduate research - you HAVE to read this if you are serious about fashion theory. It's really pretty accessible for a university level text; much more so than Barthe's fashion writing.

So, although it's not for everyone,I found this is a clear and insightful look at the way our culture and our dress influence each other.
