For the classrom.

There is, by now, some variety of textbooks to choose from, covering quantum computing and quantum information;-- the output of research papers has been explosive since Peter Shor discovered his algorithm. Two books stand out as being especially ready for use in the class room, the one by Nielsen-Chuang, and the present one by Hirvensalo. The first covers more ground in physics (theory), and has a bigger selection of exercises;-- the second stresses the math and the CS side of the subject;-- it has more worked examples. It can be readily used in the classroom in a one semester course, and it will go over well with students in both math and in CS. The level is even, and a beginning student can progress in steps, following the text, and doing the exercises.

good Intro to Quantum Computing

This book provides a good intro to Quantum Computing for beginners, plus it gives a clear presentation of the current results to more advanced readers. It does, to put it in the author's words, provides a good bridge between quantum mechanics and the theory of computation. It covers the basics, Turing Machines, some Theory of Computation, Shor's factorization algorithm, Grover's Method, etc.
It also has some helpful appendices for beginners in the end.
Quantum Algorithms are covered fairly well, but as the author himself acknowledges, Qm. Info. theory, Qm. Communication, Qm. error Correcting, Qm. Crypto. etc are not covered.
On the whole, a good read. Highly recommended.

Very impressed

In short: very small book in terms of pages (Under 200), discusses and reviews major Mathematical concepts around Computer Science, Number Theory and Quantum Computing including Shor's Theorom. The author being a Mathematician, seems to be very good at describing these topics in a concise manner. The book briefly introduces material from Theoretical CS (e.g. From Computer Language Theory such as Turing machines etc.) as well as Number theory (Abelian groups etc.) for people who may not have that background.

About the Author
"Gregory D. Lee" retired as a supervisory special agent for the U.S. Department of justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in late 2003. He is now a criminal justice author and consultant.

Throughout his diverse government career, he has conducted and supervised numerous international drug conspiracy investigations, and at one time he was the resident agent-in-charge of the DEAs Karachi, Pakistan, office. While in Pakistan between 1994 and 1998, Mr. Lee became personally involved in several notable terrorism investigations. He participated in the arrest of Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, the mastermind behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombings who was thought by many to be the architect of the attacks of September 11, 2001. He also later testified at Yousef's trial and was cross-examined by Yousef, who elected to represent himself. Through informants, he also assisted the FBI in locating Amil Kanzi, the terrorist responsible for the murder of two CIA employees outside CIA headquarters in 1993. As a result of his terrorism investigation experiences in Pakistan, he has lectured for and consulted with various agencies within the U.S. intelligence community. He also appeared on an episode of the Discovery Channel's "The FBI Files" that included information about his actions during the Kanzi investigation.

Mr. Lee taught conspiracy investigations, drug smuggling, informant management, and many other courses as an instructor at the DEAs Office of Training, located at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He developed and taught weeklong conspiracy-investigation seminars for federal, state, and local law enforcement officers and intelligence community analysts around the country. Hespent a year as a member of one of the DEAs international training teams, visiting many countries to provide conspiracy and drug enforcement training to foreign law enforcement officials.

He is the author of the textbook, "Global Drug Law Enforcement: Practical Investigative Techniques," published by CRC Press, and he has written several articles on drug enforcement topics for professional publications, including the "FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin" and "The Police Chief" magazine.

Mr. Lee also served as a counselor for the 160th session of the FBI National Academy in 1990.

Prior to working for DEA, he was a police officer for the cities of Saunas and Pasadena in California.

Mr. Lee has a combination of more than 32 years of active duty and U.S. Army Reserve service, and he is a chief warrant officer 5/special agent with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, better known as CID. As an Army reservist, he is an associate instructor with the U.S. Army Military Police School and is a subject matter expert in counter-drug operations and terrorism.

Shortly after the attacks of September 11, 2001, he was called to active duty and served one year at the U.S. Army Operations Center's Anti-Terrorism Operations and Intelligence Cell at the Pentagon, where he routinely analyzed highly classified intelligence data and briefed the Army's top leadership on terrorism and force-protection issues.

Mr. Lee earned a master of public administration in justice administration degree from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, and a bachelor's of science degree in sociology with dual minors in vocational education and criminology from the University of Maryland. While attendinggraduate school, he taught a criminal investigation course for Monterey Peninsula College, Monterey, California.

He is a regularly scheduled guest speaker at the Defense Intelligence Agency's Joint Military Intelligence Training Center in Washington, D.C. Mr. Lee has been a guest lecturer for the International Law Enforcement Academy in Bangkok, Thailand, the California Narcotic Officers' Association, and the International Narcotic Interdiction Association. He is a frequent radio talk show guest concerning his DEA assignment in Pakistan.

Good book, lots of information I just don't believe it should be available to non-law enforcement personnel. I couldn't help thinking that in the wrong hands some of this informantion can put officers in danger!

This Book trains the criminal !!!

Gregory D. Lee may have had a distinguished career with the DEA, and this book may be well written but I can't help but notice that Mr. Lee discusses tactics and procedures that ultimately assist in training criminals to outmanuever the very law enforcement officers who are still on the job attempting to make an impact on the war on drugs. Why is he publishing operational information that can benefit the drug cartels?? Its about selling books, and making profits, not protecting tactics that law enforcement officers still use. Shame on you Greg :(

Don't forget the heart, Ms. Gibson...

Kate is at a crossroads in her life, both professionally and personally. She decides to move to Gospel, Idaho to help her recently widowed grandfather run his grocery store. On the way to Gospel, Kate hopes to live out a fantasy and have hot sex with a stranger at a hotel. Unfortunately, the tattooed stranger turns her down flat. Things get more interesting when the stranger turns out to be Rob, a former pro hockey player who runs a sporting goods store near her grandfather's grocery store.

Although The Trouble with Valentine's Day is entertaining, it falls short. I have read quite a few Gibson books and consider See Jane Score her best by far. The dialogue and storytelling keep the pages flying.

The Trouble with Valentine's Day had promise but she needs to freshen things up a bit. Do we really need another hero with a tattoo? This time it's an enormous snake that wraps itself around Rob's body. Secondly, her fascination with light reflection---blue from the dashboard, gold from the window, etc.---gets old really fast. She does this in nearly EVERY book. It has become a distraction for me.

Luckily, Gibson has continued with her humorous dialogue and interesting secondary characters. However, following her grandfather's sweet romance only points out the weakness in this story. While Kate and Rob generate hot, sweaty scenes, they are missing heart.

Note: the author needs a better editor. Rob is a former hockey player from the NHL not the NFL. Geesh!

Still A Good Read

I have to put my two cents in. I almost didn't read this book because of the bad reviews, I'm glad I changed my mind! While this book is not Ms. Gibson's best, it is a worthwhile read.

As to all the complaints about the fu mancho, get over it!! Is every male character suppose to be generic in looks? As to Rob's cheating, get over that as well. He's a flawed character who changed his ways. Is every hero suppose to be perfect? Sometimes characters disappoint us.

Again, while this is not up to par with some Ms. Gibson's other works, it still is worth reading. I found it very enjoyable.

Funny and light read

Kate is a PI on the road to recovery after suffering a devastating loss. She decides to escape to the wilds of Idaho to spend time with her grandpa. Along the way, she stops for the night - Valentines Day - at a ski resort due to bad weather. Maybe it was the hot buttered rum, or the fact that she was dumped by her longtime boyfriend the previous Valentines Day (only to have him marry the rebound girl), but Kate hates Valentines Day and decides to do something out of character - proposition a stranger, only to be shot down cold despite the flirting and sparks that is evident between the two.

Fast forward a few weeks, where she is dutifully helping grandpa with his grocery store and meets the man who owns the sporting good store across the street - and it just happens to be the same man who turned her down.

Rob, a former hockey player, was a dominating force on the ice, only to have his career destroyed after a one-night stand with an obsessive fan while separated from the woman who trapped him into marriage because she was pregnant with his child.

After a lot of hilarious meetings and bantering between the Kate and Rob, they finally start to realize that there is an attraction between them. And they finally start to act on the feelings, despite not really have faith or trust in one another. During which her grandpa and his mother fall in love and teach them a thing or two about trust and love. Although the book lacks emotional depth, it is a nice distraction and a quick read. I thought the ending was cute too!

Rob's tattoo alone had me wondering what it looked like in the flesh so to speak. I'd want to see this made into a movie for that alone! As for the goofy mustache and soul patch - hey, he finally shaved, didn't he? Get over it ladies! As for the typos - blame the editors, that is what they get paid for!

I was able to study it with a French professor who is very
knowledgeable on the life of the author. His additional
information gave so much meaning to St-Exup�ry's life and words.
