The Definitive Autobiographical Experience!!

I cannot figure out which is more amazing and inspiring: the man, his films, his life or his autobiography.

Every autobiography will pale in comparison after you read this one. Frank's book should come with a

warning that he will open your mind, transform your relationship with films, and ultimatley find a place of permanent endearing love in your heart! Friends don't let friends go into the Light, without reading this book,

as I am sure, it is required reading in Heaven!

Straight from the Heart

Frank Capra's superb autobiography provides loads of fascinating information about the film industry during a thriving period, when he was one of filmdom's most popular and successful figures, as well as about the mindset of this intriguing man of accomplishment. What is refreshing, along with his basic candor, is that despite his enormous success he retains a humble and highly humane touch.
Some of the most humorous anecdotes of "Name Above the Title" involve madcap, always colorful Columbia boss Harry Cohn, who took his Gower Street studio from the ranks of "Poverty Row" to the that of a giant. Capra helped significantly with box office smashes such as "It Happened One Night", "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington","Lost Horizon" and "Meet John Doe." It took awhile, but the Capra film which has soared to top spot in the hearts and minds of the public was the 1946 release starring Jimmy Stewart, "It's a Wonderful Life." The star was so enthused about the story that he pitched it personally to Capra after driving over to his house. Capra relates the time that he begged Cohn not to drop a struggling young cartoonist from the Columbia payroll, predicting that he would be sorry. Capra was right as the cartoonist was a young, meek Iowa farm boy named Walt Disney.
One of Capra's great contributions was directing and producing the excellent World War Two documentary series "Why We Fight." He tells about being called into the office of Army Chief of Staff, General George C. Marshall, who asked him to undertake the project. "But I've never done a documentary!" a surprised Capra replied. Marshall pointed out that he had never run an army before either, and that the American way during the critical war period was for citizens to learn jobs with which they were previously unfamiliar. Capra saw Marshall's logic and the rest is history.
This autobiography is fascinating enough for the interesting information about Capra's life. What makes it even better is that you are reading the revelations of a good man who did his best to instill positive values into his films, and to help in his distinctive way to make America a better country.

A solid biography for the film buff and the history reader.

This is not a Hollywood confession, it is not a self serving ego trip, it is solid autobiography. Frank Capra made it by himself, he endured poverty, humiliation, and disappointment. He had brains, artistic sensitivity, and a boundless store of energy. As the son of immigrants he was given nothing except a work ethic. He worked his way through Cal Tech and got an engineering degree. With little job opportunity after graduation, he bummed it for a while over the southwest. Then he landed a job writing gags for Mack Sennett. He grew from there by writing screenplay. Capra was at his creative best when portraying realistic themes. The next step was directing, where he carried his realism to the top. Early in his career, Capra saw the Academy Award as the sign of artistic excellence,and set out to win one. He poured every ounce of his creative energies into his films. On several occasions he knew he deserved an Oscar, only to be disappointed again. Then he made it with "It Happened One Night." Yet to Capra everything went wrong in making the movie: the wrong leading man, the rewrites, the arguments, the mistakes, the frustrations, the last minute changes. Your first Oscar is your toughest. After that Oscars came naturally to Capra, and he won a bundle of them. Now his "name was above the movie title" on the marquee. The book chronicles the making of his best films, each more interesting than the last. But Capra was more than Holloywood. He stood for artistic integrity and decency. He was generous and willing to help others; he also had his ememies, and was large of ego. He gave unsparingly of himself during WWII as the officer in charge of making Allied training and propaganda films. There's more about this man, much more. Its worth every moment of your reading time. Next Christmas, when they run "Its A Wonderful Life" on TV again, I guarantee you will appreciate the film more than ever. I would recommend this book to film buffs, and lovers of history or biography.

Great, but needs editing

This book gives a great understanding of SQL Server core concepts and best practices. The most important tasks like installation and basic configuration are explained in great detail, and it is mostly clear and concise. Sadly though, it is riddled with typos and bears the markings of a book rushed by a deadline. Hopefully this will be fixed in later editions, for it is otherwise a great book.

I will definitely keep it as a reference.

I bought this book to prepare for the 70-462 exam. This was to be the book to give me a strong base knowledge and I bought another one that was to be more exam centric. This book did exactly what I wanted and more. It should be on every DBAs shelf. I have read it once all the way through and would like to find time to take another pass sitting in front of a computer to test the examples to get the most out of it. I will definitely keep it as a reference.

A must have book in every DBA's arsenal

This book is definitely a must read. From anyone just starting with SQL Server or a seasoned database professional, this book has something for all.
The book starts with an overview of the new features in SQL Server 2012 and then talks about SQL installation/upgradation best practices. It then covers topics related to configuration, service broker, CLR integration, security & change management. These topics are so vast in themselves that one should not expect a very detailed coverage, although, the authors have made sure the reader gets enough knowledge to be able to go off their own. What I liked most about this book is its coverage of topics related to performance tuning & optimization. There are at least 3-4 chapters which are very detailed and informative. I'm sure beginner & intermediate DBAs will hugely benefit from this. The authors have also covered the regular topics related to replication, clustering, backup/restore, log shipping, database mirroring etc.
There is also a small chapter on SQL Azure administration & configuration. The much hyped SQL Server 2012 feature of AlwaysOn also gets its own chapter in the book too.
Finally, the book does not miss out on covering the reporting services, analysis service, integration services & sharepoint integration.
To summarize, I think the book does justice to its size(around 900 pages). It provides crisp and concise information related to basics & specialized topics. However, it does leave a lot to be explored by a DBA on his own. For a huge product like SQL Server, even several volumes might not be able to cover all.
I recommend this book to my fellow DBAs. Go for it.....

it started out great until we got to the part about dog catchers mutilating the stray dogs they catch! Some of the book should definitely be taken with a grain of salt as it is clear the author's advice is based on her experiences in India. Apparently, they have not advanced in veterinary science as much s some countries. Felines in America always live passed ten to twelve years, contrary to what the author says, excluding extenuating circumstances. Still, the basic message behind the book rings true in most cases and it is worth reading.

A Brilliant Book

Errett Bishop was my friend and colleague and we had many discussions about this book and its subject matter. It is a difficult book because the way of thinking about the subject is unfamiliar to classically trained mathematicians, and this was a disappointment for Bishop. But in it Bishop found how to give, for example, a constructive proof of the Riemann Mapping Theorem - something which Goedel told Hilbert would not be possible (despite Ostrowskii's contemporary proof which was constructive except for the last step which was hanging by a hair). There is much more in this remarkable book and we are fortunate that Ishi Press International has reprinted it (with a New Forward by Michael Beeson). Highly recommended but difficult.

Few are Ready

Because I learned to program computers before I learned calculus, the Riemann integral was "obviously" a computer program in disguise, except that the shrinking step-size "obviously" suggests the limit if the integrand is rational valued. On the other hand, I started to think that calling exp(9) an "exact" value was strange, since it's not exact in the same way that a rational number is exact. Along the same lines, xx -2 does not = 0 for any rational x, but only for a real number. But what is a real number? A Cauchy sequence of rational numbers, none of which satisfy x^2 - 2 = 0. In terms of rational numbers, you can find values of x such that xx - 2 < epsilon.

The point is that, if you want, you can base analysis on the natural numbers rather than on sets. You can reserve the term "exists" for actually computable numbers. To me this book, so far, presents analysis as a vast machine made of rational numbers. This makes certain proofs more complicated. At the same time their content is intuitively clearer, since (it seems to me) it all boils down to rational numbers and "high school algebra" (Zeilberger). Also important (and actually fundamental) is a rejection of the LEM. This appeals to me, since a math based on LEM is more theological/metaphysical perhaps than is necessary. I can't help but think that applied mathematics is constructive, since quantity and proportion seem to be where the rubber meets the road. To base analysis on natural numbers and concrete/particular constructions also gels with the math one learns on the way up to analysis. I personally think its important to learn mainstream analysis as well as constructive analysis. This particular constructive analysis book is written for readers who already know some classical analysis. It's dense. It's "motivated" in the specific sense that Bishop contrasts his version of analysis with the classical version. There's not a single picture in the book, nor are there many examples. Instead he covers lots of bases, including complex analysis and measure theory.

UPDATE

I still think highly of the constructive approach. I would have probably benefited more from a more elementary approach. Bishop speeds through basic analysis in order to get to the constructivized graduate level stuff, probably because constructivizing basic analysis was easy for him and even largely done already by Cauchy, Cantor, and others. It's not hard to get the basics of constructive analysis free, I now see. Anyway, I should also mention my own shift into anti-foundationalism in regards to math. I will be learning classical analysis in pursuit of my degree with less resentment now, even if constructive analysis seems truer and purer in some ways. The reason? Influenced by philosophers like Richard Rorty and Rueben Hersh, I'm coming around to see mathematics, as far as I am concerned with it, as a language for describing reality. I think it's picked up like a language. If you are looking into constructivism because you're skeptical about Cantor's infinity of infinities, for instance, you might want to read Hersh's book instead of Bishops. Zeilberger's blogs are also worth looking into. Chaitin's Metamath is also great.

To sum up, I still think this is great book, to the degree that I am worthy of it, but I've been benefited just as much by more philosophically explicit and less mathematically difficult writers. I read the philosophers in order to figure out where I should apply my effort. At the moment, I'm thinking that humans belong at the strategic rather than the tactical level. I don't think an applied mathematician will need foundations as much as he or she will need a harder-to-define "intuitive" know-how. I'll let you know.

Interesting for some

I ran into constructive mathematics while looking at Homotopy Type Theory. Constructive mathematics takes a hard line on statements of existence: if you say a certain value exists, you have to show how to calculate it. Constructivists don't accept commonly held ideas like the Law of the Excluded Middle and the hierarchy of infinities. Without those tools, you can understand why most mathematicians thought that almost nothing could be done with constructive logic.

This book is probably the best known book in the constructive mathematics. Bishop showed that you can use constructive logic and still do real mathematics, like calculus.

The value of the book is seeing how the low-level definitions change and seeing how constructive logic is used in practice.

Some of the definition changes are expected. Real numbers are defined as sequences of rational numbers that get closer and closer to the true value. Other definitions are unexpected. For real numbers, =, >, and >= are all defined separately and not in terms of each other. You would think that >=, where we say "greater than or equal to", would be defined in terms of "greater than" and equality, but it isn't. This feels odd, but it doesn't affect many things.

It was good to see constructive logic used in practice. When I first heard about it, I thought it would be awful. Yes, it is occasionally requires turning things around. Yes, it sometimes lessens what can be proven. But most of the time, you just say to yourself that there's two or three things to keep in mind and it works fine. In many proofs, the logic was the same as a non-constructive proof; the only difference was the definition used for real numbers.

The book doesn't explain calculus or analysis or metric spaces. It expects you know those areas and that you've seen the non-constructive definitions and theorems. This book just rewrites the terms and theorems in a constructive fashion and proves the constructive theorems.

My background is limited, so I was only able to read 4 chapters in detail. The introductions weren't especially enlightening or inspiring, which was a disappointment. Bishop's constructive set theory is not very interesting to me, since I'm unlikely to use it and I think Martin-Lof's Dependent Type Theory does a much better job. Most of my enjoyment came from satisfying my curiosity on how the definitions and logic are used to build more complex pieces in mathematics and what limits they impose on it.

Great short story romance !!!

"Curves for her Soldier" is a lovely romance about wrong timing and making up for that lost time. Charlotte's husband died in a car crash. His best friend in childhood, Frank, has come to check on the lovely, curvy widow, his "love" that slipped away years ago. They meet and the strong feelings they once had are still there. Only back then, Charlotte was with Roger and couldn't find it in herself to be unfaithful. Little did she know that Roger was going to be a nightmare to live with. Trying to heal and get on with life, she feels glad Roger is gone, but also feels unworthy of Frank's love. Twists and turns, interesting people and hot sex on the kitchen table make this worthwhile.
Harmony Raines is a wonderful writer, you can't go wrong. ENJOY !!!

Fairly good story

While the book itself was well written technically, the speed at which the author rushes through the life altering conversation/climax of the story and straight to the HEA will leave you whiplash. Another chapter or two and I would have given it at least 4 stars if not 5. It was just too rushed.

The book was good, but not as good as I though it would be. To me it wasn't worth the 2.99 I paid for it. The story almost seemed forced like the writer had to think to hard. The words had no passion. Not impressed.

I haven't bought this ebook, but I do know a lot about AutoIt, and for one thing, it is not an Auto IT department, so we are not off to a good start. Any AutoIt programmer worth their salt, would be gritting their teeth seeing the use of the name AutoIT. AutoIt stands for Automating It. This ebook is not exactly cheap either, and so I expect RAJAN is milking things. Some might think I'm just being superficial, but if RAJAN hasn't noticed about the name, what else hasn't he noticed. I seriously recommend people just use the excellent AutoIt Forum, Help file and Tutorials that are available, than this ebook which is not officially sanctioned ... which are all free. He's not the only one to have written a book about AutoIt either, and the other available through the forum, is free, and got the nod of approval from many of us.

This book is a lifesaver! AutoIt Scripting for Beginners is a great beginner’s guide and will help you to understand and discover how to use the program easily and quickly. Before starting with AutoIt, I had no idea what scripting was or even the fondest idea of how to do it. But when a new project came up at work, I needed to figure it out, and fast. After looking around online for a little, I decided to learn from an expert and came across this guide, AutoIt Scripting for Beginners. All I can say is that this book has been a HUGE lifesaver! It’s easy to understand and is packed full of great advice and useful content that you can start applying right away. Overall I give this book a 5 star review and just want to say thank you to Rajan, the author, for making something such a helpful resource. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who wants to master AutoIt. In fact, if I had to pick what my favorite thing about using this book has been, it’s that you don’t need any prior experience or background programming knowledge to use it.
