The Modeler's Datafile (MDF) series goes out on a high note

For the first 10 volumes the Modeler's Datafile series was "must have" purchases for both modelers and general enthusiasts alike. In retrospect this seems in no small measure due to the editorship of Richard A. Franks. Since turning the reins over to Andy Evans the quality has plummeted.
The current volume goes some ways towards recapturing lost glories. It is very informative and well written and there is a lot of information packed in its 144 pages. The 144 pages is in itself somewhat of a return to basics as the previous 7 MDF titles were a uniform 128 pages. The illustrations are also well chosen and for the most part well reproduced. The captions are especially informative unlike some previous volumes in this series.
Like others in the series this book is an 8-1/4" x 11-3/4" (European A4) sized card cover with color throughout. The book is broken down into chapters describing and illustrating each subtype beginning with the prototype and progressing through to the AU-1 and F4U-7. The book concludes with a chapter on the Corsair in foreign service and a chapter and appendices devoted to modeling. As always, there is an eight page bound foldout with line drawings depicting various Corsair types.
The later is my biggest complaint about the book. Only the various F4U-1 subtypes are depicted. No -4, -5, or later variants at all. Also, while the color photographs are well reproduced (and interestingly there are a lot of period F4U color photos in the book) the black and white photos have a rosy tint to them. This doesn't detract from their value but is off-putting.
All in all the book can be highly recommended. Released in 2010, it seems to be the last of the MDF series. An F-15 book was announced but appears to have been cancelled. I haven't seen any other books by authors Morrissey and Hegedus but if this one is anything to judge by they would be very welcome.
