A PYTHON-ESQUE MANGA ADVENTURE

Mix a little Monty Python with a splash of Van Helsing and do it all in Manga style and you get an uproariously funny new book from TokyoPop. It was some 10,000 years ago...or maybe it was just three, that the Kingdom of Dikay was overrun by the demonic forces of evil until a champion arose to vanquish them and bring peace to the land. Now, the great champion, the hunter of evil, Van Von Hunter is ready to do battle again against the "evil one" and recruits an old comrade, his next door neighbor... "what's her name?" Well, no matter, fighting evil is her birthright even if she can't remember who she is.

Evil is afoot as the Dark Prince returns to the Land of Dikay, intent on retrieving an evil artifact and reclaiming his throne...if he can only remember where to find it. He's joined by what looks like Elsie the Cow on steroids and a decayed little jester who promises the Prince he can show him how to unleash darkness on the world. Van and...what is her name...are off on their quest as well because it says to do in the "Manual of Exposition." But before Van can retrieve the artifact he has to face the "trials of the sandwich" and that is one nasty piece of deli fare that he has to eat and has been putrefying since it was forged a thousand years ago. Van cleverly diverts the priests who guard the sandwich and hides it behind his back and the Priests now deem him worthy. Of course they neglected to tell him the artifact had been stolen centuries ago. And so Van and his comrade, ummm, well her, continue their journey onward, on a collision course with the Prince of Dikay and his forces which include a only a small band of peasants but hey...they're disgruntled peasants.

Van Von Hunter was one of the funniest, most entertaining books I've read in a long time. Filled with bad jokes, worse puns, and riotous slapstick, not everything always works but there's so much that you can't help but laugh out loud over and over again. It's not easy to do great comedy in a graphic format and this one succeeds on all counts Mike Schwark and Ron Kaulfersch, winners of TokyoPops Rising Stars of Manga, have fashioned a Mel Brooks-style Manga adventure with a great script and outstanding artwork. The note pages on each character in the back of the book are amusing as well. What a fun book this was to read. I'm anxiously awaiting the second volume.

A histerical read!

Ever wondered what would happen if you got amnesia, you used to destroy evil, and the eccentric guy from next door wants you to come join him again... three years later? Well, honestly, probably no one in their right mind has wondered that. But that's what heppened to... well lets just say the sidekick!

Now she is helping Van Von Hunter (if that IS his real name) once again destroy the evil forces of yet another eccentric character. Nothing in the world could possibly make up for his stupidity and randomness. However, after attempting to take over the world who knows how many times, he must be stopped again!

Oh did we forget to mention there's a cute decaying little jestar? A lunatic maid who cleans with a knife? And a butler with a monicle and eye patch? (As VVH would say, "He's the ULTIMATE butler!")

Excellent Teaching Tool

This book is a wonderful toool for teaching vovabulary to reluctant readers. My students enjoy reading it and have been able to retain and use the vocabulary properly that is targeted in the book.

Even if you've been graphing for decades or are a scientific or statistical sophisticate, this book is more valuable than you'd guess. You may know some stuff to help make your graphing better, but I bet there are many more principles, features, and techniques you simply never thought of. This book has these. But for even more incisive visualizations, you should get also Cleveland's "Visualizing Data". You'll need both books really. (There's not much overlap.) Even though making use of graphical perception principles increases the power of your graphs (the main topic of "Elements of Graphing Data"), there are even more incisive graph types you need to learn about; only a couple of these are in "Elements"; the others are in "Visualizing Data". After digesting Cleveland's two books, you will be a master data-behaviour elucidator. Once in a great while you may need the old statistical inference paradigm (test-statistics & p-values), but much more often you will be so glad you have the power of Cleveland's visualization paradigm to use instead. But again, you will need both "Elements of Graphing Data" and "Visualizing Data". Start with "Elements" though. Good Story

Georgie and Nina are best friends with one major difference. Georgie has long known she never wants kids and relishes the freedom that life choice brings. Nina on the other hand wants nothing more than to be a mother. Married for several years she and her husband have endured the rollercoaster of IVF with no success and it has taken its toll on their relationship. Deciding that she can't go through the torturous process again Nina and Georgie go out drinking one night and with her inhibitions lowered Nina asks her friend if she will be her surrogate.

Nobody is more surprised than Georgie herself when she reluctantly agrees to do the ultimate favour for her best friend. But as often happens in life things don't go quite as smoothly as planned, leading the two women on a journey that tests their friendship and teaches them surprising things about themselves. Georgie is hard to like at times and I can't say I really grew to enjoy her character. I don't know that she was as fully developed as she could have been, although she was realistic enough.

Although She's Having Her Baby explores the heartbreaking theme of infertility it does so in a way that includes many light hearted and humorous moments. Those who have been through pregnancy will relate to the cravings and unwelcome changes it brings to your body and those who haven't will gain some insight into what it is all about. The description of some of the mothers in the playground is funny but perhaps a little cliched.

All in all this is an enjoyable story with some surprising plot twists that kept it more interesting than the blurb suggests. I will say I enjoyed it more as it went along. The writing is good with an engaging style and the dialogue is natural and authentic for the characters. I also enjoyed the contemporary Australian setting. It is a promising debut for Lauren Sams and will no doubt appeal to those who enjoy an engaging chick lit novel.

Such a fab debut novel, funny and heartwarming. Ms Sam deals with a heart rending topic with a deft, light touch, the dialogue and characters fairly spring to life on the pages. Look forward to reading more from this clever new voice.

In a loosely configured essay, Rybczynski (Architecture, McGill Univ.) discusses the idea of comfort and the Western cultural attitudes that have shaped it since the end of the middle ages. Rather than dealing with the technical aspects of architecture, he reviews such cultural variables as intimacy and privacy, domesticity, ease, and ideas about light, air, and efficiency as they have changed over time. Essentially Rybczynski makes a plea for the primacy of cultural ideals as a basis for creating psychologically comfortable homes. Though he is selective in his history and examples, this is a worthwhile counterweight to the all-too-common technical practices of modern architects. Recommended. The underlying concepts of domesticity

I love this book. I love the topic, analyzing the humble dwellingplace for its universals. I love the way he has organized by those very topics rather than by the detail of historic era or functional object. "Home" liberates the whole topic to a level whidh allows the reader to consider what all people have in common for their needs and ambitions, and it inspires such optimism for it demonstrates how resourceful people naturally are. The reader feels so much more aware of mindless routines and can delight in the choices of continuing what is habit or deliberately designing a new tradition. For this reason I like using the book with middle school and high school students. It is too long for the time allowed in the school calendar, but it suits a jigsaw approach of different groups of students studying one of the conceptual chapters and applying the insights to their own lives. The reading level is challenging but appropriate if students are not expected to read too much of it in too short a time. This is one of those treasured volumes that suits the purest progressive tradition of education: it is based on authentic experience which helps students find meaning in their real lives here and now, all the while stretching their capacity to see logic in the world. A nice companion to it is "House" by Tracey Kidder for its similarly direct and quiet manner of discussing the decisions people make, alone and collaboratively, to improve their living situation. Like "Cod", this book should be the way students learn history: focused on a recognizable topic and connecting years and years of interaction between people as it describes the everyday personal consequences of innovation and competition. 'Home: a short history of an idea" needs more than five stars, and it needs to be widely available to schoolchildren, perhaps by individual chapter.

This book is an exploration into the meaning of the word "comfort" and its place in the home. Rybczynski begins the volume with an examination of the Sixteenth Century painting by Durer "Saint Jerome in His Study". He describes each of the objects and furnishings visible in the paining in turn, noting that they are not particularly conducive to comfort or reflective of individuality. Rybczynski goes on to describe how this painting may be representative of the era in which it was painted, how houses at the time had many occupants and were spaces where people lived communally, but not necessarily as a family in the present sense of the term. He argues that in the Sixteenth Century, the nuclear family as a residential unit was non-existent, since children were sent away to live and work with others at a young age, and households always included many unrelated servants or apprentices. It was only later, as the concept of the nuclear family became more established that the need for privacy came to the fore, and private and public spaces began to be differentiated within the house. Later developments in technology, especially plumbing, ventilation, and lighting also came to influence housing design. One of the themes of the book is how the field of interior design has often been faced with the conflict between what looks good and what feels good. Rybcynski stresses that often the style of a design wins out, leaving the residents with the very least in comfort (to the point of having to carry their toothbrushes to and from the bathroom for lack of proper storage there, for instance).
Some of Rybcynski's discussion is quite interesting, particularly that concerning the influences French, Dutch, and British cultures have had on the development of houses and homes over the centuries, especially in North America. It would have been interesting to consider some of the influences of other world cultures on housing styles as well. For example, certainly Spanish and Arabic cultures have had a strong impact on house design and interiors of North American homes. However, considering such topics for the sake of completeness might have taken the book too far afield. In order to explore the concept of comfort with respect to design, Rybcynski has selected only a few examples of cultures and designers to explicate his points.
The book is academic in style, although quite accessible and engaging for the general reader. Sources are listed in the extensive endnotes, and there is an index.

For anyone buying or building a home.

I first read this book 14 years ago and it changed my life. This book is a must for anyone buying or building a home. You will never look at a house in the same way again, and you will appreciate good and functional design as never before . Your understanding and excitment at the things that make a house a pleasant home will be enhanced more by this book that any academic or popular text on the subject that I have seen or read. The author weaves together the historcal and social aspects, as well as design, in an intriguing tale. This is truly absorbing reading, you will not want to put it down. It is plainly and simply, very well writen. Rybczyski speaks as one of us.

About the Author
Kenneth Whitten is professor emeritus at the University of Georgia (UGA). Dr. Whitten received his A.B. at Berry College, M.S. at the University of Mississippi, and Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. He taught at Tulane, the University of Southwestern Louisiana, the Mississippi State College of Women, and the University of Alabama before joining the UGA faculty as assistant professor and coordinator of general chemistry in 1967. He remained coordinator of general chemistry throughout his UGA career until his retirement in 1998. His numerous awards include the G.E. Philbrook Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award, the Outstanding Honors Professor, the Franklin College Outstanding Teacher of the Year, the General Sandy Beaver Teaching Award, and a Senior Teaching Fellowship. An award was established in Dr. Whitten's honor in 1998 celebrating outstanding teaching assistants in UGA's department of chemistry.

Raymond Davis is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. He received his B.S. at the University of Kansas in 1960, his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1965, and was a Cancer Research Scientist at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute from 1964 to 1968. His awards include the Minnie Stevens Piper Professorship in 1992, the Jean Holloway Award in Chemistry Teaching in 1996, and (five times) the Outstanding Teacher Award given by campus freshman honor societies. He was an inaugural member of the University's Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 1995.

M. Larry Peck, Professor Emeritus at Texas A & M University, received his Ph.D. from Montana State University in 1971. He won the Chemical Manufacturers Association Catalyst Award in 2000, Texas A & M's Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Chemistry Teaching in 2002, and the Division of Chemical Education's Outstanding Service to the Division Award in 2007. Until his retirement in 2006, Dr. Peck taught science at all levels and directed programs designed to improve the teaching of physical science programs now known in Texas as "integrated physics and chemistry." The resource materials developed in these workshops are being used as models for other state-funded teacher training programs.

George Stanley, Cyril & Tutta Vetter Alumni Professor at Louisiana State University, received his B.S. from the University of Rochester in 1975 and his Ph.D. from Texas A & M University in 1979. He has extensive research experience in inorganic chemistry. George has won numerous awards and accolades, both nationally and locally, including the NSF Special Creativity Award in 1994, the LSU University Excellence in Science Teaching Award in 1995, the LSU College of Basic Sciences Center for Excellence in Science Teaching each year since 1997, and the Baton Rouge-ACS Charles E. Coates Award in 1999. He recently was named 2005-2006 TIAA-CREF Service Learning Fellow due to his longtime commitment to service-learning programs at LSU.

A different approach

This book appears to be listed under "management." It is, however, unlike any other management book I've even seen. To me, the average leadership book is mostly about cheerleading, fads, and selling the author's services. Very rarely do I run into any actual science.

And that's what puts this book apart from all the rest. It's based on the discipline of Evolutionary Psychology (EP). EP posits that some of the ways we behave and think and feel were selected through evolution. For example, humans evolved in an environment of limited nutritional choices. That's why we crave sweets, fats, and salt. While that was effective hundred of thousands of years ago, when these things were scarce in the natural environment, it's very unhealthy and counter-productive today, when these things are cheap and available everywhere.

These kind of mismatches are a central theme to Naturally Selected. As another example, when we were still on the African savanna, leaders naturally came from among tall, strong males who could hold their own against wild animals, rivals within their own tribe, and rivals from other tribes. Unfortunately, we still tend to think that way. That's why, for example, the taller candidate tends to win the election, get the job, get the girl, etc.

There are plenty of positives in this book, but I think it's rather unique in the way it treats leadership in a much more circumspect, wholly objective way. Another good example of this is the "babble effect." That states that the people who talk the most are typically recognized as leaders among groups of strangers (juries, lab experiments, travellers, etc.). I could go on and on.

Probably the biggest thing I got out of this book is what causes so many people (usually males) to want be leaders in the first place. It's mostly a matter of increasing one's status. From an EP perspective, increased status means increased sexual partners, which is how such a propensity tends to get passed down.

I actually came to this book from the EP side of things. To me, I think this is an excellent application of EP. I'm really curious to know what more business-oriented types might think.

Just as I always imagined!

"Naturally Selected" is the best book I've read on leadership. And, having a master's degree in leadership communication, I've read many books on the topic. I've always suspected that some of us are more genetically inclined to lead and some to follow - but that when push comes to shove most humans have some capacity to step up and lead. This was a fun, interesting and enlightening book to read. As a leadership communication trainer and writer, this book gave me a renewed and realistic frame of reference regarding evolution, history and where we go next in terms of leadership development. Thank you Mark van Vugt, PhD. and Anjana Ahuja for such an excellent read!
