New Server Quick Map

Life saver. Pure and simple. I have been working with Windows and Linux servers on and off for nearly seven years, but the change to 2012 was the roughest. This thing saved me a lot of wasted time trying to run down where they moved this console and what they renamed that service set and how do I make it do what was done differently in 2008 or Linux. The right level of detail for someone with some experience with a server environment, but probably not what a beginner might find useful. It does assume you know the basics of servers and how they interact and AD and GPOs and the like. This thing serves me as a quick map for the new software. Worth every penny.

A Failure of Marketing Theory Application

Jain/Haley's Marketing: Planning and Strategy is by far one of the most convoluted, under-cooked, and poorly written marketing textbooks I have ever read. As a Graduate student of both marketing and entrepreneurship, I've had a good amount of experience with different texts, and have been extremely disappointed with this excuse for a strategy textbook.

After reading the first two chapters (as well as the second case study), I was astounded to see a number of grammatical and spelling errors, not to mention poorly constructed paragraphs that frequently mixed tenses to the point that I had to re-read entire sections. Barring technical issues, the text also employs poor examples of the concepts it attempts to apply. For instance, on page 63:

"In 2008, McDonald's decided to directly compete with Starbucks by adding coffee bars with "baristas" in almost 14,000 of its U.S. restaurants, serving cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, and the Frappe. Right away Starbucks planned offensive measures to prevent McDonald's encroachment on what it considered its territory."

And that is all we get. No mention of the actual strategy employed. Just an unsupported claim lacking any educational relevance whatsoever.

If I didn't have to read this text to pass tests, I wouldn't. Sadly, I have to struggle through the mess that is Marketing: Planning and Strategy. Avoid this text at all costs. Professors - please save your students the misery. Horrible job on this text; is this really an eighth edition? I would hate to see the first.

AVOID!! Is there any Planning or Strategy for this Book?

I have this book as well (8th ed) - I completely agree with this review. As a marketing and real estate graduate student with marketing and psychology degrees, this is absolutely the worst excuse for a textbook and I am actually rather angry I had to waste so much money on this book. I also am required to read the book for exams, but I have been trying hard to avoid reading anything in it - the case studies are so poorly written it is distracting.

A 2-3 page case study should not take an hour or 2 to read, but it does when it must be read repetitively to make sense of it. They also have a tendency to just stop - as though they were just telling a story and then they are done - no points made, no questions asked - just a history of a company or companies and that's it.

I couldn't have said it better myself KC Student - everyone should avoid this horrible textbook at all costs!! Professors: forcing students to read this book is like cruel and unusual punishment.. not to mention downright mean.

Detailed and useful

While other reviewers may have been displeased with this book, I found it highly useful and relevant. I am a senior undergraduate marketing student, so that may color my perception of the text differently.

I will agree that the case studies lack insightful analysis. However, there is great consideration given to differing strategies and methods of analysis- the authors are not quick to declare one better than the other.

The subject hierarchy within each chapter could use better organization. For example, there are five steps in identifying which market to serve, yet those sections are at the same "level" as Identifying Markets. I kept having to turn back to verify I was still in a subcategory of a subject.

This is one of the few textbooks from my entire undergrad experience that I plan on keeping rather than reselling. Instead of giving vague theories, this text defines concrete methods and step-by-step processes for carrying out and implementing strategies.

Excellent coverage of Excel object model

There are a number books on VBA and on programming Excel with VBA. Some of these are quite good and have many useful examples. However, once one understands the basic techniques, accomplishing one's goal primarily requires detailed knowledge of the Excel object model. One can dig through the object browser and/or the Microsoft documentation for this information or use the macro recorder as a 'prototyping' shortcut, but these techniques are somewhat time consuming and are less than complete.

This book's coverage of the Excel object model is by the far the best I have seen and is well organized and through. It explains the intent of the properties and methods rather than just explaining the syntax.

The author also details various caveats about how various components within the object model operate. This is very useful. As a simple example, he explains that setting the Chart objects .HasAxis property before the Chart has any data series defined will result in a cryptic error that is not covered in the documentation. Without this information one might end up blindly copying some ugly code from the macro recorder that seems to work though it wouldn't be clear just why this code worked while the other method failed.

If one is not already very knowledgeable of Excel and VBA, this book would probably work best accompanied by a book like Walkenbach's, "Excel 2003 Power Programming with VBA". Eventually however, this will probably become the "goto" reference.

Mr Roman's book is very good value.

Mr Roman is an extremely competent and clear writer. This book, whilst not as big as some, doesn't waste space with any padding, and boring repititious stuff you see in some texts.

Although there could have been a little more on interplay between Excel and the other Office objects, esp. Outlook, this book makes up for that with its clear, organised and logical presenatation.

I use it as a reference book, and seem to remember the content of it more clearly than I do with other comparable books! Why is this? Mr Roman has a tidy turn of phrase, doesn't wafffle, but his explanations seem to sit well in how my mind works. I hope this will be the same for you.

I recommend this book for those who may be beyond the beginner stage of learning VB(A). It also includes some handy utilities for users of Excel.

Mr Roman - well done. Look forward to your next (high level?) Excel VBA book.

Always on the Cutting Edge of the Game

Over the last 5 years, Chris Brown's site Smartfootball.com has influenced the way I see (and coach) the game of football more than any other source...and I consult a lot of sources! I read 20+ books a year on football coaching, strategy, and management. Brown stays on top of the game, breaking down the newest strategies and noting why they emerged and where they evolved from. This book contains the best articles from his website all in one book. The best leaders and teachers are great simplifiers and Chris Brown makes the complex seem simple. I'm a high school head football coach and love studying the game. I have a lot of the cornerstone books like Bill Walsh's Finding the Winning Edge, Woody Hayes's Hotline to Victory, "Tiger" Ellison's Run & Shoot, Homer Smith's manuals, and Lou Holtz's The Grass is Greener. I recommend Chris Brown's book and site in the same sentence with those essential texts. All of them will change the way you see the game. The material on Urban Meyer and the Spread Offense traces the roots of the offense and the power of the "true" option as opposed to the "read" option. The chapter on the Patriots's use of "Joker" players like Gronkowski and Hernandez to create uncertainty in the defense with versatile players is essential reading -- it ties into Woody Hayes's idea of building your offense to beat the top 3 teams on your schedule (in this case the Jets, for Belichick). If you run the Spread and haven't read Brown's ideas on "Constraint" plays, you are missing out. The chapter on the No Huddle Offense and how it gives Tom Brady (of all QBs) simpler defensive structures to attack is also outstanding. The bottom line is that this is a fantastic football book from one of the best writers on football today. Buy this book and visit Brown's site and you'll be a better coach. He's as good as it gets.

Not as good as expected

I have followed Chris Brown's Smart Football website for years, and bought this book (actually 2 of them) knowing that many of the chapters in the book would be very similar to posts I had already read on his blog. What I was expecting was more of a reference book, something that I could flip through for refreshers on basic terminology and offensive and defensive schemes. Chris Brown has mentioned before that there aren't very many good general football strategy books out there, and I was hoping that his book would fill the void.

It turns out that the book is mostly copies of blog posts already on his site. In many cases the only difference between the book chapters and the blog posts are the removal of diagrams and videos explaining certain concepts. The original blog posts were very informative, and I assumed that in buying the book I would get additional material- more diagrams/examples, better organization so that it could be used as a reference, etc. But that's not what this book is.

Despite being disappointed, I didn't mind buying the book because of the enjoyment I have gotten out of his website. However, the information in the book is the same as the website, and, it turns out, the website is a better medium for understanding the concepts. I hope one day Chris does write a reference book on modern football strategy.

Too short, but still required reading

I came to SmartFootball.com somewhat late to the game, but have been an avid reader since. When I found out that Chris Brown was putting putting out a book of "best of" combined with new material, I was very excited to see the result. I have not been disappointed.

The book will be especially enjoyable to those who are unfamiliar with or new to the site. I had read only two of the older articles, but even there I found new insights after re-reading them. I suspect that even if you are familiar with all of the older content, the book is still going to be a must have based on the new content alone.

My only minor complaint is that I wish some of the articles had been longer, and the older ones expanded on further. Several times I felt like I was getting into the meat of the essay only to find it ending on the next page. Despite that, I would consider this to be required reading for anyone interested in a deeper understanding of the strategy of football, at any level.

Sang H. I love this book it is so helpful as a Taekwondo teacher to use as a reference for drills and techniques. Sang Kim goes into detail of the ritual of step sparring and theories behind it with techniques mentioned.

Catcher presents a narrative in which adolescent embrace of American ideals of individualism and egalitarianism lead to criticism and rejection of dominant postwar social practices—a narrative as threatening to some adults as it is heartening to others. Attempts to remove Catcher from high schools as an "un-American" text have generated continuous and extensive controversy, distinguishing it as one of the most frequently taught postwar novels—and the most frequently censored.

Treating Catcher as a cultural Rorschach test, In Cold Fear tracks debate discourse in open-ended interviews, public media, editorial letters, and in school board and community meetings in Alabama, California, New Mexico, and Virginia. Debate participants express common agreement with Salinger’s critique of postwar American life but divide over whether adolescents should be either exposed to or protected from this perspective. The peculiar angst of the debate is explained by participants’ articulation of a wizening of the American spirit: a declining vision of American exceptionalism, recognition of social powerlessness, and fearfulness of an uncertain American future rooted in the threat of nuclear annihilation.

In Cold Fear provides historical post-holes for understanding how differing audiences interpreted Catcher and offers a suggestive context for understanding the contemporary anxieties of America’s "troubled teens."

I was given an ARC copy in return for an honest review -

I wanted to like this story, I truly love reading about the MC worlds. This book was a bit too unrealistic for my taste and the ending **SPOILER ALERT** not happy that after finding each other they lose each other...not cool...

I did enjoy reading this story

This book seemed to be off to a fairly strong start and definitely grabbed my attention, but it didn't continue at that level throughout. I really wish I could give it a higher rating, but it just didn't quite meet the needed expectations. Overall, I did enjoy reading this story, but I believe these 2 authors could have produced a better quality book -- pieces of this storyline should have been more fully developed (instead of just "dropping in" 1 or 2 sentences in hope of explaining things or trying to support details).
Parts of this book were just TOO unrealistic and fake-- such as the instantaneous outpouring of feelings & "soulmatedness" between Devlin and Logan during their first really intimate moment (24 hours after they first meet) AND the way that Logan suddenly becomes a "badass" who fairly easily attacked and killed her 2 captors near the end.
Also, I really appreciated the attempt to convey the power, respectfulness and value of a good D/s relationship -- unfortunately, the details shared during the book seemed too random, underdeveloped and shallow to support the more intense level of D/s that Devlin seemed to need.

Next run they make will probably be to Disneyland, the Circle of Death (and Depraved) are NOT to be believed as described.

I would have given this book a 3 Star "It's OK" rating if the description hadn't been so misleading and I don't want readers to think they are getting something that is absolutely not there.

This story could easily be picked up by Pixar and made into a PG-13 movie. There is nothing depraved about it, there isn't any steamy sex, and if you're looking for even the merest touch of BDSM, it's not in here.

The authors remind me of young boys (although they are female) sneaking a peek into a National Geographic magazine to see women's bosoms, giggling all the while to themselves. This seems to be their idea of depraved.

It's a lovely little love story that you have read in about a million forms one time or another, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING nothing that you are led to believe is here. I hate to think this way, but I have a feeling the other reviewers must be friends and/or relatives of the authors.
