From the Author
We are witnessing a renewed interest in the importance of citizenship in America today. President Bush's recent call to all Americans to help fight the war on terrorism by reaching out to others through acts of kindness hits on an important reality: the United States is only as strong as its communities, and its communities are only as strong as the citizens that comprise them. Large, important national goals such as homeland security are carried out through the vigilance and generosity of real people living in real towns, communities, and cities.
This book's title, "Putting Faith in Neighborhoods," is a slogan for our times. To the extent that we can have faith in the generosity of one neighbor toward the next, American democracy will be strong. And to the extent that we can welcome to the table community-based organizations motivated by religious faith and sound values when we are trying to solve problems in our communities, we will be the better for it. For the past couple of decades, more and more people have agreed that putting faith in our neighborhoods is a wiser choice for the United States than putting faith in top-down solutions.
About the Author
While serving two terms as mayor of Indianapolis, Stephen Goldsmith earned a national reputation for his innovations in government. As mayor of America's twelfth-largest city, he led a nationally acclaimed effort to rebuild the capacity of the city's neglected urban neighborhoods by eliminating counterproductive regulations, reducing taxes, and leading a one-billion-dollar Building Better Neighborhoods campaign. The resulting transformation of downtown Indianapolis and many nearby neighborhoods brought recognition to Indianapolis as a model for urban areas throughout the nation.
Many of the efforts to revitalize Indianapolis neighborhoods involved creative partnerships with private, secular, and faith-based groups. Called the "Front Porch Alliance," the partnership became a prototype for many faith-based efforts across the country and attracted the attention of government leaders from the president to governors and other mayors.
Goldsmith is now Special Advisor to President Bush on faith-based and not-for-profit initiatives and was appointed by the President to chair the Corporation For National and Community Service. He also served as chief domestic policy advisor to the Bush presidential campaign.
He currently serves as Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and e-Government for ACS Inc., Faculty Director for the Innovations in American Government program at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and Chairman of the Manhattan Institute's Center for Civic Innovation.
Goldsmith is a 1968 graduate of Wabash College and received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1971. He graduated with honors and served as Associate Editor of the University of Michigan Law Review.

Leadership
By Jan E. Vermillion
Steve Goldsmith shows us that the involvement of faith-based organizations in urban neighborhoods does not damage or infringe upon the relationship between church and state. Instead, he provides a logical argument for how local neighborhood churches can lead the process for neighborhood re-transformation. Often, it is the neighborhood church that provides the only symbol of hope for those in need, and the only resource for individuals who need support to overcome serious social problems. A must read for all urban mayors. Actually, a must read for all those who are trying to make a difference in urban neighborhoods.

It Takes a Neighborhood
By A Customer
Mr. Goldsmith obviously has an excellent grasp of what it takes to make a modern American city work. He does not lose sight of noble dreams and goals, yet manages to remain firmly rooted in the realities and challenges of urban life. He provides inspiration and hope to those who feel overwhelmed by the "bigness" of cities and government. He conveys the message that individuals do count and that they can make a difference, and even provides a blue print for how to organize the effort. The most important aspect of this book is that this guy is not simply espousing another theory. He's actually done it and seen it work! This book should be required reading for all mayors.
